3D is the “next big thing!” We hear this about every five years or so...and have for the last fifty years. Well, Benchmark Reviews has posted an editorial today explaining how and why they think 3D might finally catch on this time.

To most people, the sudden industry interest in 3D technology is considered a fad. It's an eccentric marketing ploy for the fringe enthusiast, merely feeding a niche market. It's too expensive, or it's too immature, or it's too proprietary. If this has you believing the skeptics and naysayers, then 3D technology is already doomed to fail. Fortunately for entertainment enthusiasts there's a difference between pessimism and reality, and I'll use this editorial to explore the very real possibility that we'll soon live in a world based around 3D technology.

That's a fault of active shutter tech. Passive polarization doesn't seem to have this issue, because it's not flipping your eyes every 1/60th of a second.
 
the article right though, only when the glasses are NOT required will 3d take off...

oh and the cost comes down...
 
As long as we have to wear glasses of one sort or another to enjoy 3d it will just remain a fad.
 
3D photography works really well. I'm in the market for one but the only compact is the Fujifilm FinePix REAL-3D W3 and it takes pretty rubbish 2D shots. If they could release a camera that did 2D and 3D well I'd buy one.
 
To use his very words, I don't think the author and his article "have a made a convincing argument for 3D technology" (sic) or that his "predictions will be reality before you know it."
There still isn't a unique 3D industry standard, so it will take years before everything is normalized and 3D can really make progress.

I'd wait until no 3D active or passive glasses are required too, but I don't know how well these 3D glassless technology will work out for viewers that are not right in front of the TV, like when a whole family is watching TV on the sofa, armchairs on the side, on the carpet, etc.
It's one thing to watch Avatar 3D at the theater, and quite another to watch 3D at home.

I disagree. At home passive solutions are still headache inducing and the PQ is very poor compared to modern active shutter glasses. I don't know how Avatar did such a great job with passive tech, but passive 3D monitors and television for home still have very poor clarity.

I have worn NV's 3D Vision glasses for hundreds upon hundreds of hours and have only experience nausea when manually tweaking the convergence increase the size of the environment until my eyes could no longer handle the stress. Default 3D is pretty impressive, but not nauseating. But you can make 3D environments ENORMOUS by tweaking convergence. There are few examples of this better than World of Warcraft. You don't get the scale of the environment until you've seen it in 3D.

Maybe but my experience has been these symptoms with passive glasses (Avatar IMAX), most recently.
 
Everyone in the movie industry likes the 3D idea not because its "new and cool" but because "its harder to pirate". Try recording a 3D movie in a theater with a camera and see how it turns out. It wouldnt even be worth watching.

The nausea/tiredness symptoms arise when Crosstalk takes hold.
Mainly due to the screen refresh rate not keeping up.

Personally I hope anything similar to current 3D never catches on. The glasses are annoying to wear and while the #d looks good if enough money is dumped into it it's off. If you don't focus on what it's shot to focus on it is uncomfortable to watch. Not a fan. Just give us higher res tv's and content and forget about the 3d until you can do it right.
 
I've seen the new 3D stuff and seen some 3D tv demos and I am not impressed. They are just trying to get people to buy a bunch of new stuff they don't need. People still aren't fully on board with 1080p, give me a break.

Just another fad.
 
I'm not into wearing glasses. Who says in the future when we are old we will have those glasses around to view out photos?
 
There is a difference between it "catching on" and "being rammed down consumers throats by leaving them no other choice."

Just stick one of the polarisers lenses in front of the video camera and you would at least get a regular 2D capture.

Though I wonder, what would happen if you put a video camera behind each polarizer lens, would you get two videos that you could then merge into a side/side or top/bottom video that most 3D players recognise?

I should try it out at work sometime, sounds like a fun way to kill a couple hours. :)

Imagine having 3D built-in to every product you own with an LCD screen, big or small.

Remember the article from Monday about the triple lens housing that hooked onto your Iphone or whatever and showed "3D"? That was 3 parallax image layers I believe. This new Toshiba TV has 9. People called it dumb, but I think it's on the right track;.
 
I live in Tokyo and I have to say I am pretty excited about picking up my new glasses-less 3d phone next month (sharp 003sh). Yeah, it's just on phones now, but soon it will be on laptops, then big screens for sure. 3d definitely isn't going anywhere, at least for the Japanese market.
 
I've spent a ton of hours with the glasses on and I've never have experienced any of these symptoms.

Some people have problems with it and some don't. But I think the vast majority don't.
Like some people can easily get car sick. So do they have to have a car that doesn't make them car sick?

Gee, I've been using 3D on my PC going way back to 2000, that sure is a long fad. It's not something you use all the time, just something you use when you feel like a more realistic view to enhance the game.

With Panasonics release of the AG-3DA1 along with CS5+Cineform being able to edit the footage, coupled with the fact that you can buy a 240Hz 3D tv TODAY at the store....3D is in it's infancy(as a mainstream delivery method in the home), but it's definitely here.....I think, lol.
