Which used system would be better?

First off, I am a Mac only person.
I need another mac and have run across 2 systems.

533mhz G4 Powermac with 1.5gb memory and 1mb L2 cache

or

933mhz G4 Powermac with 512mb memory and 256k L2 cache

Reason I am asking, is I know that the cahe is important, but, well how important.
I also found a Sonnet card with an upgrade to 1.4ghz. So either way, I can upgrade one of these machines.

Reason I am asking is I am trading what is my last pc for it.

I would get the second one,the extra MHZ will probably help, and you can always upgrade the ram

Your getting L2 and L3 confused.

L2 is on-die

L3 are the extra chips of the processor board

as far as i know, there arent any 933s with 256k of L3. You can tell how much L2 its got by looking at the processor board. no chips = no l3, two chips (topside) = 1mb L3. four chips (top and bottom = 2mb l3

from what I know, the difference between 1 and 2mb of l3 isn't huge. but the difference between zero and 1mb is noticable.

I'd get the 533 with more RAM since you are goign to put the upgrade proc in their anyway.

Since you would be putting an upgrade cpu in - the cache doesn't matter on the existing CPU's. It would depend on which type of machine the 933 is. I would lean towards the 933 machine as it is probably a newer model, and would garner more money if you resold it with the 1.4ghz in. The physical condition of them would make a difference to me too.

the 933 would have a higher system bus speed than the 533. This is the most important limiting factor on G4's. Always go for the highest system bus speed you can get, becuase you can upgrade everything else to fit BUT that.

To answer some questions.

The 533Mhz Model is the Digital Audio

The 933 is the Quicksilver

While both have superdrives, and both have factory hard drives.

I was looking at the Apple spec sheets online last night befoe posting, and was getting a little confused, as to which model would be better. I know both cases are in perfect condition (is there ever a beat up Mac?), and of course both having superdrives is nice.

I would not be upgrading right away to the 1.4 proc, and the only thing I dont like is the zip drive slot in front of the Digital Audio case, would like to replace that with a blank spot.

your trading "P4 2.8 Prescott 2GB mem 600 GB SATA Raid 5" for one of those macs? or am i looking at the wrong 'last pc' ?

No its a P4 2.8 Prescott @800 FSB
MSI 865GM2 mainboard
512 DDR3200 matched for dual channel
200GB SATA Drive

Thats what I am trading for a Mac

i cannot believe your selling that for a mac...

Why not? I hate PC's. They offer me nothing for software that fits my needs. it was left over from a relationship that went bye bye. it was a web server that we used in a data center in Seattle, So I bought a Mac, or 2, and wanted to get rid of all PC based anything in the house.

If this is about gaming, sheesh, I have an Xbox, if I play it, it will be usefull. Thats the other thing I am getting rid of to. XBox with a chip, 200GB drive, some 50+ ripped games on it, and about every single rom ever made for any system.

So, see, I dont like PC's, and even having one in the house bugs me.

my question is why do you need 3 macs... let me guess so you can have three computers that all do the same thing but at least the dont crash, right? ill tell you im a big fan of macs but honestly i would never sell my pc for one, id like to have one of each that way ill never have a compatibility issue.

Powerbook is old G4 500, and the screen is busted now (fell)
Dual proc G4 takes care of the hard programs like FCP, DVD Studio, etc.
Mini is for basic use, and I am sending it to my parents to switch them. The new (used) mac will be for anything other than FCP. As that machine is not even hooked up to the web at all, so I want a good enough machine to handle all web/email, or course office documents, music and picture organization, nothing to hard. I just want to make sure I get one that will handle it.

That way, I dont have to wait for another mini, my parents get one, and ill have a machine to do stupid stuff on.

amen brother.

i sold my 2.4c@3.36 9800pro 1gig hyperX lian li modded case, all that.

never looked back :)

I took the 533.
It had a larger HD, more memory, and the case was in better shape. Since I will upgrade the proc, speed did not matter.

I want to paint the case similar to the Rotten Apple case, so bad. But have yet to figure out how to remove the paint on the inside of the sides, so I can paint.

That case is tits.

This 533 seems peppy, maybe a bit slower on some web sites, apps seem ok. otherwise, I am happy to ditch the PC.
