i'm currently deciding between polk monitor 40 and polk rti4's right now. does anyone have any insight on comparing these two? they are quite different, as monitor 40's are usually used for fronts/mains, and rti4's are usually used for satellites, but supposedly the rti line is higher end than the monitors. however, i have heard the monitor 40's at a local circuit city, and they sounded pretty good. unfortunately, i couldn't find the rti's anywhere :(

the monitor 40's go deeper, but the rti's freq range is higher. i have a subwoofer so thats no prob, but i DO like the sound from my speakers to sound full.. i've also heard the infinity primus 150's and liked them as well but again, they weren't as FULL as the monitor 40's.. when i listened to the monitor 30's they really didn't compare to any of the above.

can someone shed some light?
 
I bought some axiom m3ti's and a panasonic xr55 receiver for a 2.0 PC solution. The sound quality is really amazing in everything. You should read around on a few audiophile forums, but keep in mind that there are a lot of HTPC purists and people working in the industry with competative products that will slam good companies like Axiom even though they've never even listened to the speakers before (AVSFORUM.com is one of them) Or even promote inferior products. FOr example in one forum they tried to convince me to buy $130 a pair bookshelves and send them to a guy named ed to make sound like $5000 speakers for $30!

Read around and decide what best suits your interests. Since you have a sub you don't really need deep speakers yet speakers with a smaller woofer might sound too bright to you, or by the same token, smaller bright speakers might better match the sub so you have more clarity in the highs. I would say look for speakers that focus on highs and mids and leave the bass to you sub. The reason I picked the Axiom M3ti's because I had no intention of buying a sub yet and they still have decent strong bass clarity without using a sub. They're kind of like having the best of both worlds since the highs and mids are also clear.

does a receiver make all that much difference?

i'm not sure my current sub can handle non-powered speakers right now.. and i'm actually contemplating getting a new one of those too..

Well you are looking at non-powered speakers with the Polks.

If you need powered, I don't think many will argue against the Swan M200s as one of the best active media speakers.

If this is just a good speaker setup, the axioms M2ti, M3ti or Rocket ELT or new Onix X series may be a very good choice. You will need a receiver or an amplifier to give you the volume you are looking for.

Alternatively you can get two bookshelfs and use a sonic impact T-amp to power them. The money saved on the T-amp can be put towards better speakers, and you always have the option of a receiver down the line. If you decide that you need a new sub, parts express has the dayton's on sale at the moment btw.

Picking up a set of Onix X-LS speakers myself as a matter of fact. Can't wait :)
