Alright guys, I'm going to be building a machine for my mother in-law and I would like to know which RAM out of the following you think is best. Keep in mind the only thing this PC would be used for is web broswing, and the occasional Solitaire :p

both of those are really good picks, but since your mother-in-law won't be noticing the difference anyways, just get whichever one is cheaper.

now, since this is someone who doesn't seem like she will be using the compy all that intensively, i guess 256MB is fine; but honestly, 512 is what one should have for WinXP to run smoothly...but i guess 256 will work fine for her purposes.
 
Well, they are both the same prices. I think I'm going to just go with the Kingston She gave me $230 to work with, so here is what I've done so far.

AMD XP 2400+
Asus A7v400-MX == Onboard Video
Samsung 40GB 7200RPM HDD
256MB PC2700 Kingston

Totalling in at $217.00 w/o shipping/handling
which means I have $13 to mess around with, I was thinking about just getting rounded cables, since... there won't be any fans in the system.
 
That's a good system for her needs. I probably wouldn't worry about the rounded cables: she won't be running anything that will require extensive cooling.

hrm...not just to disagree, but i say go w/ the rounded cables. If you use all her budget, then she'll feel better, b/c it seems like you did your job. I know, it's weird...but if you don't use it all, she'll feel insecure: "Was there something he should have gotten? Am I prepared?" etc. etc...

plus, if she ever looks at the inside / if you ever show her the inside, those'll look a lot better :)
 
Well, just today she even asked me to set it up once I'm done. I don't think she'd be opening it :p
But I will keep that itno consideration.

True, but I believe in saving money wherever possible (probably cause of the way I was brought up, or my Irish heritage :D). Also, the rounded cables may improve the visuals, but really, would she really notice or care? Nothing against the grandmother in question, but most people outside the hardcore tech circle don't really care about the presentation; they only care about whether it works or not; thats the most important consideration.
