ive been thinking about this lately ever since ive been using my friend's ipod.

im looking at the:

Ipod 20 gig for $300
Creative Zen Micro 5 gig $220
Creative Zen Portable Media Center 20 gig $430

i have alot of music so i really dont know about the micro. i have like over 4000 mp3s and about 3900 that i actually listen to. the media center is nice and all but expensive. and i want something that would fit in my pocket. Ive used the ipod with the standard speakers and they dont sound that great. is it like that with all speakers? i heard that creative players have the best quality. i also want something with looks. i odnt want something of the best quality but looks like a 1980s cell phone
 
have you considered the iriver h320 or h340?

for the price of that ipod, the iriver is color, shows pictures, records audio, plays the radio and has the same storage space...
 
zen micro, im scared to get one though. I'd spend a lot of money on new cans and amp
 
I would love an iRiver H320, but I can't see my funds allowing me to get one for a long time. I really need an mp3 player though. That Zen doesn't seem too shabby.

hmmm the irivers look really good compared to the price of ipod and what you get. how are the sound quality on them?

I did a lot of research on mp3 players awhile back and many people praised iRiver's sound quality and features. But this was on their H120 and 140 models, which are now discontinued and replaced by the H300 series. I would imagine they maintained quality. They're basically the same except now they have color displays and jpeg viewing capabilities.
 
Nomad Zen Xtra 30gig 199 at the egg. I got mine a week ago and I love it. Cant beat the sound, volume, battery life, and simple software. Granted its not the best to navigate, I just keep mine on random play and it just trucks along for the advertised 14 hours. I didnt really need a fancy interface for a shuffle list, so keep that in mind.
 
Can anyone with an iRiver H300 series comment on the interface? I've heard it's very cumbersome to navigate when you have a lot of songs on there, and that creating playlists is tedious relative to the iPod.
 
I wouldn't want to carry the iRiver or Zen brick in my pocket. Right now I am just waiting for a good description of the sound quality from the Olympus m:robe 100 before I buy one. If you want more capacity, go for the newest iPod.

If you want flash, you can get a 128mb forge and a couple 1gb SD cards for less than $250

Pretty much all stock headphones will suck; the mx400/500 put in with some players are supposed to be among the best earbuds.

after owning a Zen Xtra, an iPod, and now my iRiver, I can easily say that the iRiver is my favorite of the three hands down.

I still cannot understand why people say it is a brick compared to others,
if you have a problem carrying it around because its too big, then you have a major problem

Navigation on my iRiver did take some getting used to, but its far from difficult, just different.
I have all my songs on my computer organized very well so its easy for me to find a song i want
If you have all your music in one folder on your computer then yes, it might be a bitch
 
Rio Carbon perhaps?

I also have a 30 gig Zen Xtra. The smaller size of the Carbon has made it so that I carry and use it a lot more. So I'd suggest that you look at the Mini's... Ipod Mini, Carbon, or Zen Micro. The 5 gig limit is a little annoying, but it's tolerable.

The iRiver is more like a brick in its dimensions and weight compared to others (excluding the Zens). The design is not as slick, it is heavier, and even more brick shaped

Which iPod(s) have you owned? The 4th generation is significantly lighter and smaller in dimensions than the iRiver. Maybe not as much smaller as the m:robe100, iPod mini, carbon, or zen micro.

Why must I have a problem to wish to be undisturbed carrying an mp3 player in my pocket? Little differences in size and weight are very apparant when you are walking around and sitting when the player is kept in a pants pocket. Also, on extended trips a little size makes a big difference.

The iRivers GUI is not bad, but it is not as easy or logical as the iPods; then again most are not. I can't imagine someone making the buying desicion just on the interface difference; it just isn't that big of a deal. The same goes with the slight difference in sound quality - it is minor enough to not make a difference if you are using it as a portable player in portable situations with portable headphones.

The reason I did not suggest the Carbon is that it has a problem with static with headphones. Someone tell me if this is fixed yet.
As an aside I called Rio yet again asking about the static issue and ETA on the fix. This time the rep said they did not view this as a RIO issue and there were no plans to modify the Carbon. They said if you insist on using "non standard" headphones then there a number of mods that will keep the headphones from causing static... Once again these guys do a pretty good job on products but are hostile to their customers

In the 20+ GB range, either the Apple iPod, the iRiver H300, or the Sony NW-HD3.

In the 4-6 GB range, either the Creative Zen Micro or the iRiver H10.

i <3 my 15gb gen 1 dell. not one problem with it, and the sound and transfer speeds are awesome
 
i dont use music match, i dont even have it installed. i dont know why everyone always bashes dell for musicmatch, you dont need it

I have not experienced this. Time to go find all the headphones in the house and do some testing...

Even if you do have the problem, it can be fixed with a little peice of electrical tape. But the polished metal case sure is sexy. :D

I paid $200 for my Dell DJ 15gb back in the day and it's great. I don't see much out there for < $200 hard drive players even today. I hate itunes, can't stand it, and ipods are overpriced anyway imo.

The Dell doesn't require musicmatch btw, I never installed that crap.
 
The iPods don't require iTunes, either, so that point can be thrown out for both the Dell and the Apple.
 
I got a Rio Carbon after playing with my freinds Ipod, and it's fantastic! You dont need to install any software it's recognized as an extrenal HDD and you just drag and drop the files.

if you want video: gmini 400
if you want mainly audio and little video: h320(should be round 230, check misticriver.net boards
if ou want audio only, maudio 3 if you want to spend around 280,
ihp 120 if you want to spend at alil less,
matter of choice,
stay away from karma, dies at long term, I used it for a year, had to do many repairs

So If I were to buy an IPOD I could just hook it up to my USB port and it would auto-detect the ipod like it was a mini-drive as a new drive and I would be able to just copy and paste .mp3s to it...?

i just purchased an iriver h320 for 312$ shipper on newegg. i'll let you guys know how much i like it when it gets here next week.

friends have:

Dell DJ 15gb
Dell Pocket DJ 5gb
Rio Karma 20gb
Archos GMNI 400
Creative Zen Touch
Creative Zen Xtra

For a 40+gb player, I would take the iPod over the Creatives any day.
15-20gb, the Rio is great, I like it, but a bit dated. The iPod 20gb is a good choice too
4-5gb I would say the dell, its small, and cheap, and does everything pretty well.

the GMNI is sweet, small, cool, but is a movie player, so it doesn't really fit in with the rest, I'd reccomend it though


The new iRiver 5gb player looks sexlicious, but these are just outta what i've tried.


edit: as for copying and pasting to the iPod, the program Anapod Explorer will let you.

However, I don't see why you wouldn't want to use iTunes, WinMX, J River Media Center, Music Match (well i can see why you wouldn't wanna use that but hey) or any other music player. Keeping track and organizing the 5-10 thousand music files would be a bitch w/o it. Honestly, I even let iTunes organize the folders in My Music for me. 6104 songs and organizing them on my own? Forget that. Not to mention ID3 tags. How do you know what they'll look like on your mp3 player in windows explorer? Oh, you don't.

Drag and drop would be very very sloppy with 40 gb (or even 1/2 that) worth of music. Honestly, I can't say I miss it.

Dragging and dropping to the iPod = portable HDD mode, which is cool too, it will keep it all seperate from your normal music and everything.
 
recently I purchased the iriver 340 and I love the thing. I'd trade off the size advantage of the ipod for irivers multitude of features anyday.

also, one of the features of the iriver h3xx series that I really like and isn't mentioned as much is the ability to create your own themes or download some that others have made. adds that level of 'uniqueness' apple always seems to be going on and on about.

i paid 380 for my 340 from mwave.com

i got my iriver today and have been playing around with it alot. i love it, great sound quality and the menus arent that hard to use as many people have been saying. it takes about 10 minutes to get used to really. i upgraded to the new firmware and im recoding some videos for it right now. ill tell everyone how videos play in a bit

So you don't find it difficult to create and manipulate playlists as well as sort by Title/Artist/Album? I know a lot of people have complained about this, especially when they get a lot of songs on it. How much music do you have on it?
 
well what i do really is make the folders manually when i transfer them. i make the folders accoring to artist and to their cds. its easy for me go to through the root and get to the artist that i want. i have about 1,000 songs now
 
Need the recording ability.

Need 96kbp 16bit....thingy.

Mostly recording radio radio talk shows. Then editing sond forge or audition.
