Which CPU for Ansys Finite Element Analysis

I'm helping my brother put together a computer which he will use to run finite element analysis on, Ansys at the moment. He is more or less hardware illiterate which is why I'm helping.
I was at first thinking about the 2600K given the splendid reviews is has gotten but after reading it seems Ansys and other similar software really takes a large advantage of more cores. He can't wait too long, so not Intels next generation high end cpus, it is also his own computer so no EE or high end Xeons as they are a bit to pricey.
So would a SB 2600K be good enough to run it or should he look at for example the I7-970?
 
I believe a 2600K would be a better choice for FEA than a 970, especially if he is willing to overclock.
 
Does it have to be Intel specifically??

As you say Ansys takes advantage of more cores (I do not know if this is true, never heard of the program tbh)why not use a Phenom X6??

If you are set on Intel I would probably go for a SB based setup, but I do not count out the raw processor power of a "older" I7 9x0 on a X58 mobo (as prices are going to drop on those, with SB being more readily available by now.


I would advise against overclocking any system, as your brother is not to computer savvy, and possible small problems related to a mild OC could leave him without a working PC (until you have time to fix it for him)
 
Depends on what license he's using. AFAIK the standard license only lets you use 1 core, in which case Intel would be obviously better.

Also note that non-Xeon Intel processors don't support ECC, this may be an issue if his runs are very long.
