All this time, I was debating between a 7900GTO, 7950GT, and X1950XT. Yesterday, I talked to eclipseoc (from here) and he persuaded me in a new direction. Why spend the extra $ for those cards, when I can get a 7900GS, which performs almost as well as the others?

Here are the games I play: Halo, Command and Conquer Generals: Zero Hour, Starcraft: Broodwar, Diablo 2: Lord of Destruction, Warcraft 3: Frozen Throne, Rome: Total War, Splinter Cell 1, and I'll probably buy some more games, like Battlefield 2.

I want to run ALL my games at FULL resolution, HIGHEST AA & AF settings, etc. Will a 7900GS be enough? Or should I look into an X1950Pro? (one think i really want is a lifetime warranty, so if i get the X1950Pro, it will be from ATI)

Or will I need a 7950GT/X1950XT? The X1950XT looks really enticing, except I want more than a 3 year warranty.

What is "full" resolution? That makes a big differernce. The games you listed though are not as demanding as more recent releases.
 
I think this XFX 7900 GS for 130/150 USD is probably the best deal you'll find on a 7900 GS. At that price, even without the Google Checkout price, it's a great deal.
 
my friends monitor can do that resolution 1600x1200... and he has the 7900GTO.. overclocked to GTX speeds.. and he can max EVERYTHING out! and still play with high frame rates... its like your getting a 512mb 7900GTX for only $249.. try to look for it online its hard to find now..but tahts why i got my two GTO's for.. to push my high res apple 30"

the 7900GS is only 256mb i would rather go for the higher ram for your high res..
 
My brother used his new 7900GS with a 1600x1200 CRT and he could play everything full (excluding Oblivion). In BF2 he only used 2xAA because you don't need anything more.

For Halo, my 6800GS can play it on the moniter (he got widscreen so i got that moniter for dual) with everything full, though as you know Halo doesn't allow AA.

Generals is fine. I don't know about Rome Total War. Though you might have some problems with Starcraft: Brood War with even a 8800GTX :p

The extra memory with the 512mb cars helps with higher resolutions and higher AA. Though I don't know if the resolution needs to be higher but the price difference is something to think about.
 
It might be a worthwhile investment to buy a 512MB card, but realistically the 7900 GS can do everything you asked. Just don't expect it to do that if you decide to go pick up a more recent game than Battlefield 2 (1.5 years old now).

Although the 7900 GS is an excellent bargain, the 7950GT 512MB can be had for as little as $210 these days. It will also handle future games a little better thanks to the extra processing power and memory.
 
7900GS is all you need for the games you mention.
That said, it might be worth it to spend more if you plan on this card lasting for a couple years. Last I read, a 7800GT is good for 1024x768 high detail but no AA/AF in Crysis.
(weaker than a 7900GS but it gives you a ballpark idea)

If you want to run 2007 games at 1600x1200, you will need to drop the cash on an 8800GTS,
or at least an X1950 IMO.
