When will game developers learn....

I don't know about most of you, but I know of many people who are really excited about the new Mario coming out for the DS. Maybe the success of this game will show companies what is really important: a fun game. This game is basically just a rehash of mario 1 + 3, but it has caused more excitement than most, if not all, of the xbox 360 games... It is time for game companies to go back to the basics, create a quality product and don't worry about trying to make it look so pretty.

I think it is very funny that you say that because most people complain about the sequelitis that goes on with video games yet you are praising just that.

There have been very few details released about this game. It could be a complete rehash, or it could be a worthy sequel to Super Mario World. When I say "worthy sequel" I mean in the same way that the Zelda games are not rehashes, but worthy sequels with new gameplay elements that compliment the old... not like Halo, Madden, Burnout, etc, where things like 'ub3r graffix!', dual wielding, updated rosters and new cars are considered the selling point.

I'm sorry, explain to me way mario is fun? I don't really find it fun...

The thing with mario is that it is psychological. When it first came out, we were just kids. When you are a kid, you are usually happier because you focus on play. Mario gets associated with play which also associates with fun, no responsibility, etc., at a young, impressionable age.

Now, we are all older, and know how life sucks, or can suck. Sub counciously, we look for ways to take us back to our childhood, and "fun" (no responsibility, etc.). This is why each generation likes, for the most part, the music they grew up with and think all else is shit. This is also part of the reason people drink. To act young, stupid, forget problems, etc. (I'm not comparing mario to drinking, just an example).

Mario isn't good, it is an escape. Escapes aren't bad things, but we shouldn't get them confused with anything else.

I think what he means is that developers should go back to the fundamentals, it's just slowly turning into the film industry, unimaginative crap year after year. Back in the day developers didn't just create games, but genres and new experiences. Of course it's be expected that idea's eventually run out, but it's as if they're not even trying. When the 3D era arrived, tonnes of genres seemingly vanished to make way for "new and improved" games(which were great at the time, but are getting stale today) and took with them lots of gamers, it's as if old and new can't co-exist. Luckily I discovered the gba for my 2D fix.

Oh, and Mario be fun, plain fun.

What do you look for in a game - I mean, what makes it fun? I've been playing mario games since they came out and I still find them enjoyable. They're not necessarily the first game I go for, but if I'm in the mood I can still settle in to Mario 3 or Super Mario World and really enjoy it.

Also: boo on you steviep, burnout 3 is one of my top 5 games of all time :p :D

Burnout is fun, I won't deny it. But that WAS a good example of a rehash :)

Well, I've only played 2 and 3 (haven't played Revenge at all) and the jump from 2 to 3 is pretty significant. I was surprised at how quickly Revenge came out and figured it was probably a rehash. I got my xbox primarily for Burnout 3 (I could have gotten it on PS2, but then I would have had to deal with the crappy controller and no custom soundtrack).

Would PGR3 be a better example for you? Hehe. I haven't played the entire Burnout series, though.

Hey firewall... seriously, I've read the other thread about the rev screenshots...

dude, mario is PURE fun, from it's graphical construction to it's playability.

It's not like you go to the movies to watch a Pixar animation only if you are a kid, because now that you are "grown up" you'll only watch the Hostel likes.... You can "enjoy" both... (hostel is kinda hard to anyway :D)

You're also failing to see the different aproach from these games, I'm sorry, but both are fun, both are to be respected, and only because you think that the only fun you can have is shooting things around it doesn't mean that others do so...

I agree with the original poster...
Things are starting to get repetitive and boring faster and faster,
we need more original concepts, more art, and more content, we already live in reality...

that's why I PLAY games...

I dunno - I've only played about 15 minutes of PGR2 and none of three ;)

Racing games are really hit and miss with me. I love arcade-style driving games, but I hate sims. Basically, slowing down is for chumps, so if the game requires me to take turns carefully I'll get frustrated with it. So I love playing burnout, but I hate PGR. I plan on getting PGR2 for geometry wars though - my cousin and I used to play that game for hours, long before everyone discovered how much fun it is thanks to XBLA.

Check out NFS:U then... Or Ridge Racer 6. Don't have to slow down in either game really. RR6 has the best drifting

IMO - Super Mario World IS the greatest platform game ever made, I hooked my SNES up the other week just to play the game again even though it is now, what, maybe 10 or 11 years old. How many other games can people say that about???

Going off topic, did anybody ever figure out if there was a lost '97th' level in Mario World, me and my mate tried everything to find it but never lucked out :(

I retired Mario over 10 years ago. I don't care if they make 1000 sequels... I am over it.

I'm not sure about the 97th level, but I do know that I cleaned that game up every single ounce it could be. From the secret level in the middle of the ocean to all of the secret levels in the "Special" world ("Mondo" sound familiar?), I totally cleaned it up.

EDIT: after som research, I've found that the secret "97th level" is actually an inaccesible test level. Well, inaccessible without the help of a game genie. The level has a time limit of 200 seconds, and scrolls to the right. There are yellow blocks that spell out the word "TEST".

You can count the amount of real Mario sequels on your fingers. Arr4ws is right, you're missing out.

What is the difference between this fake fun and real fun? Nothing if the person having fun can't tell the difference. It doesn't matter why the person is having fun, fun is fun. If playing the latest Mario game takes me back to my childhood and makes me forget about all my worries then I'll be the first in line to get a Revolution.

Why did you "retire" Mario? Is it because it is perceived as a child's thing? Does ultra-violence somehow make a game better than a "kid's game?" People can call Super Mario Sunshine a kid's game all the want, but at the end of the day it was a pretty damn good game.

old 2d mario is cool, 3d mario is wack.

by the way what happened to sonic? sonic > mario (watch me get fla med) :p

nah sonic 2d < mario 2D --- sonic 3D > Mario 3d

i like your way of thinking...
;)

Super Mario World is a 15 year old game and someone mentioned sequelitis... unbelieveable. And there have been how many non-spin-off 3D Mario games? Two? This is going to be a classic Mario game but with new elements such as 3D characters and growing to giant size. Sounds like a winning formula because it is... this is a highly anticipated game without the use of a Halo level hype machine.

MS and Sony wish they had a character they could throw into other genres and create sales by the character name alone. To people that are "over" Mario... do you see it as a kid's series? Because I don't. I have great memories of playing the three 3 SMB games on my NES, but that's not why I played Mario 64 and Sunshine as I got older. They were highly regarded and reviewed, looked great, and played great. And they were fun and challenging. Don't let the colorful worlds fool you... they aren't kids games. They're for everyone. Yeah, usually when you hear "fun for the whole family," that actually means it'll be fun for the 5-year-old and painful for everyone else. But that's not the case with Mario. For those who think they're too old for Mario (whether it be with new "true sequel" games, Paper Mario, Mario & Luigi, etc.), well... your loss I guess. I'll continue playing them along with my "adult" games like Doom 3, UT, and RE4.

Making a re-hash of some ancient games is what game companies should do? erm...

I thought we wanted new & innovative stuff? This game is making a splash in the small, hardcore crowd of nintendo fans. The average gamer will be far more interested in Killzone/Halo/Bloodrayne type games...

QFFT. If this new DS game turns out to be a rehash, I will eat my own crow. I have a feeling I won't be getting anywhere near that crow.

Until you reach the age of 16 and realize that you don't have to play solely bloody killing games with realistic dark graphics to be 'cool' amongst your 'friends'. Oh, and I do like your emphasis on the word KIDS... it suits your post well.

Relax guys, this thread is supposed to be about what makes games fun, not an argument over who's more "adult."

Having said that, has anybody else read Raph Koster's "A Theory Of Fun For Game Design"? He argues that what makes a game fun is learning its inherent patterns - not memorizing the game per say, but learning to recognize a given situation and react accordingly. If you haven't read it, it's very fascinating and is really more about the way we think and act than the actual act of game development.

I dont really think saying that companies should pay attention to this game in particular because it shows that a game being fun is the most important thing, because not everyone thinks mario is fun (as shown by a few post already), you cant really sum up what makes games fun, as its different for everyone, I'm sure every developers main goal is to make their game enjoyable to play, but their opininon of what is fun may not be the same as yours or mine.

As for the excitment aspect, I'm gueessing it must depend on where you frequent, because this is only maybe the 3rd time I've heard anything about it.
