When Kittens Attack

At about 1:30 AM last night, my wife came into the bedroom where I was stone cold asleep and announced, "Bobby, I think we have a problem." And then I awoke to the most horrid burning rubber smell I have ever encountered. "Could you come here?" my wife asked. I got out of bed grumbling and stumbled into the office where she and the foul odor of hell seemed to have originated from.

As I walked in my wife proclaimed, "I was just working on my computer and yours started making this horrible smell and then it just shut off." My half-awake brain made a sad little attempt to process what she was saying and come up with a coherent response. All I could muster was, "Uh...That's weird."

I staggered over to my lovingly built Arrogant Bastard Box. I pressed on the power button a couple times with absolutely no response from the machine. That is when I noticed the fan that usually sits on the window sill was laying all funny right on top of the water pump for the PC's water cooling system. I suddenly became very awake. In my heightened state of wakefulness, I discovered that the little bubbles of air in the clear tubing were not moving.

The Bad

I moved the fan back to its position on the window sill and discovered a hose that had been totally bent in half and blocked all water flow. Lifting the weight of the fan off the tube and clearing the path for water did not help. Apparently the blockage had caused the water pump to die a sad, sad little death.

The Ugly

I thought to myself, hey at least the motherboard did was it was supposed to do and shut down when it sensed that it was over heating. My oh my, how wrong I was. I reset the power supply and tried to fire the box back up. Click, Click, Click. No lights, no whirring of hard drives powering up. Nothing.

I popped the side off the case and realized the horrid smell was not coming from the little water pump that could, but instead it was from inside my case. I looked inside only to see charred black funk inside the water tube coming out of the water block on processor two.

The Horrifying

It then began to dawn on my rudely awakened brain. The new kitten I got for my wife, who loves to play and knock shit off my desk, who is so cute and cuddly, climbed up on the window sill and knocked the fan off. Which landed on the water pump and blocked water flow. Which forced the water pump to burn out and stop moving water. Which caused my PC to over heat and bake my two lovely 1.2 Ghz Athlon MPs.

The Culprit

I have not had the time to take it apart yet and see the extent of the damage, but I am sure I am out at least one processor and motherboard. I hope the ram, video and sound cards are all salvageable. At least now I have an excuse to upgrade my Arrogant Box to handle Doom and Half Life 2.

ouch, good luck with all that ...

a justified upgrade is always the best ...

That last pic needs a photoshop done to show that little bugger in the state it SHOULD be in!!

Ruining processors.. what's next.. Killing children!!! CATS ARE EVIL.

Sorry for your loss when is the funeral?

omg my kitty looks like that an it breaks computers too!!! .. shes lil bit older now

but best of luck to ya man! ...

That sucks...

When I first got my dog he ripped the wires out of my old pc. :(

LOL, that sucks dude. My cat likes to chew on the wires. After a few warning taps he knew not to do that, heh.

haha, what are "warning taps"?

i hate cats, i would give it a nice little kick, i mean *warning tap*!

Simple solution, get rid of the cat :) ... I hate cats, but I dont think I could ever slam one in a glass jar,, thats just fucked up.

that is sick... what mobo is that, anyways? I've got the 2466 and the 2460 (not in use) sorry to hear about your dual system... i run my watercooling external too :p

You now know your kitty is a good one. She did you a favor.

You can now buy that kewl stuff you were afraid of buying before. And you wife cannot complain.

See what good things cats can do. :D

Seriously, that must suck to have your computer die at the paws of a cat. I've never had that happen, though my cat Stripe killed a few keyboards in her day (why do cats play with water like that, I'll never know).

Ack... I love cats, but if one did that to my computer, I'd kill it...

But hey, that's a nice excuse to get brand new dual opteron 248's....... Or whatever your wife will let you get by with :D

Btw, yes, the bonsaikitten website is fake. It was done by students at a university as an experiment to what kind of response is generated by such a site. ;)

u should just stick with dogs, they dont climb up stuff and knock down other things

Yeah, the cats are like that. Fortunately 3 of them here are too old to really care. The new one and the little hellion we kept are the troublemakers, especially the hellion. I keep the door to my room shut, and lock them upstairs if I'm working in the basement and they're getting in my way.

Too bad about the hardware...it's never cool to need to buy new parts if you weren't planning on it.

i 'm glad the kitty wasnt hurt. i have heard of pets getting fried by chewing on power cables and the like :(

I could mad at that kitty if it screwed my system up.......
Oh well, at least you can get yourself that upgrade you've always wanted ;)

I have a ferret that love to get inside my case if i ever forget to put the side on and only when the fans are running. Go figure

My cat love to chew wires. You do not know how many PS2 cables/controllers I have gone through. But hey atleast you have a good reason to update. Athlon64's are getting cheaper.

haha... yeah... wife has already OK'd the purchase of a nForce 3 250 board, a 64 bit Athalon and a ATI 9800 XT.... Now if I can convince her to let me get a Koolance and toss the old WC system...

Don't think I am going to go multi proc this time aorund.

something tells me kitty is going to meet an unfortunate end with a waterblock :D

well at least you have an excuse to get dual barton cores now right ;)

I like cats..............for breakfast, hehe.;)

That's one good reason why a cat will never be in my house and another why I'll never water cool my PC! Good luck with the upgrade.:D

Heheh... When i was a kid, we had a cool ass cat (a manx cat) and he loved to chew on wires as well. One night we (as a family) were watching TV, when the TV suddenly went BzZzZap! The picture shrank momentarily, then went back to normal. Out from under the TV stand came the cat.

He was walking kinda funny, and was shaking his head. Turns out he had managed to chew far enough into the TV power cord to get a nice mouthfull of 120VAC. He never chewed on a power cable after that, though... :D

man, that sucks... but don't hurt the cat, it doesnt know any better yet. :)(I have 3 cats and they do abonoxous shit all the time) But hey... at least you get an excuse for a nice upgrade!

PS, my opinoin of cat would probably change as soon as one of them wreck my brand new system that I just built.;)

ANother example of Cats and water don't mix!
Can I borrow the comp wrecker I want a new rig:eek:

Water cool the kitty. Kitties hate that. It's humane, yer giving it a bath... But yet the kitty's writhing and squirming in discomfort under the running water just might satiate the desire burning within you to get back at the cute little fluffball for what it has done to your PC. Win-Win... And it might make the kitty smell better if he/she smells bad. Just wear iron-clad gloves with chain-mail shirt and sleeves, cuz if kitty is fully armed (read: claws), he/she will retaliate for your water induced actions.

I'm kidding, btw... I love cats. I am just all-too-aware of their extreme hatred for water.
