When did it go wrong for AMD?

Not only has Core2 outperformed AMD, but intel also released a few "steals" that overclocked like crazy even on stock cooling.

Intel being a generation ahead in process tech (soon to 32nm while AMD will not get there for another year ) is also an issue, it gives intel more power efficient and cooler running processors. They own the mobile segment.

Intel has great PR/marketing. I'm always hearing about Intels new power-saving features like C4E, etc etc, ability to turn off single cores, overclock others, etc etc

I hear nothing from AMD. I get the impression that Intel has better power-efficiency, and runs cooler but hey who knows AMD PR is terrible in that regard.
 
Intel may be kicking AMD's butt, and they have been losing for quite some time in many areas of the game, not just market share, but I am more than happy with my $400 tower that I built ($565 if you include the 4890, but the board has pretty decent onboard video), I would love to see a $400 3.8GHz Quad tower from Intel...my i7 system isn't complete yet, and I'm already well over $950...

I think the whole locked cores on the 550's 720's etc...was really a marketing tool to get some sales going. I would imagine that even if a 550 is a 955 locked down, that they are still making a profit off of it, as there are just too many successful unlocks floating around for it to be chance. I think they did it intentionally.
