1. Was installing software (turbo tax)
2. PC was going extreamly slow so i restarted during the install
3. After the restart, it loaded up the mobo info & then came the black screen saying start windows in safe mode/normally/ blah blah.
4. Then came the windows is loading
5. Restarts after that evertime
6. No matter what option i pick on the black screen it ends up on #5 (restarting)

So far i used the xp disk to try and do a repair but it wont recognize the drive?
I have 2 harddrives ... when i try to repair it shows the "other" harddrive as example d:/windows.

I then unplugged that drive so there is no confusion but the drive comes up as c:/ with nothing next to it? so i cant repair anything.

Im thinking my hard drive is toasted.

I bought another harddrive thats on its way so my main concern is to rescue my files from the old harddrive then clearing it out and using it as storage.

What do you think?

I'm thinking you are doing the best thing you could. Get your current "C" drive outta there, install the OS on the new drive, and grab the needed files from the old drive. Then you'll have time to TS the old drive.

If a data recovery program is needed, try GetDataBack for free, and go from there.

Good Luck!

It could also not be a fault with his C drive, just a poor/crappy installation of whatever software he was trying to install which corrupted the registry or other system files. You could try the recovery console from booting off of the OS CD. Good Luck.

i tried this but can you provide some discrete instructions on what you mean.

It should let you try and repair an installation of XP, if something is wrong with the reg/drivers/etc, this will resolve it. It would explain why windows wont go past the scrolling thing.
