I had an htpc that I just used to stream movies from my main computer to my tv. That broke now I just want something small that will do the job. I got an Apple TV but wasn't impressed. Will a ruku or wd tv work? Most of the movies are h264 or mkv.

Things might have changed but the general rule a while ago was Roku for Internet Streaming and WD devices for local (DLNA) streaming.
I personally love my WD Live but I know several people who also love their Rokus.
The second generation AppleTV can run XBMC if it's jailbroken I hear.

Roku will stream local with the Plex app, so if you were already streaming from a PC/nas appliance, you could put plex on it and stream locally that way.
I'm liking Plex because in addition to local streaming, I can get channels for some of the networks and many of them have full episodes (usually the last 5 weeks) available for many of their shows (this may not last for ever but its the way it works right now).
Also more and more devices are becoming clients to plex, TV's (samsung & LG), android and iOS devices. I'm using an atom box in linux to be my plex server. Working fine so far. My biggest problem is I'm finding my router's wireless appears to be degrading. My neighbor's routers are stronger eveywhere in my house than mine. Even within 5 ft. of the router.

Try changing the channel that your wireless router operates on. There is apps for your cell phone that can tell you what channel will give you the best performance based on other wireless routers in your airspace. I lived with terrible performance for nearly a year before someone reminded me to change the channel. My internet speed literally tripled!

I did that and my tablets says the power output is even lower in the new channel. And although throughput increased in a few places more remote devices drop more. I'm sure its dying. Its only 3 years old.
