Call me stupid if you want but here it my dilema.

I had 1500 dollars to built a computer for my self but i had my friend that works in bestbuy aproach me and tell me he could help me get a computer from there with his discount and some other stuff. anyways we went to best buy tonight and i ended up getting a sony vaio pc

specs are :

3.0 gig p4 with ht 512 mb of pc 3200 200 gig hd dvdrw and normal cd \

the computer was 799 after rebate plus his discount pretty much had the computer come out to around 650 dollars on top of that i got a 6600 gt oc bfg card and that left me some eaxtra money to invest in a ipod

anyways the hole computer was like 1000 dollars after tax ect ect.

compare to the 1500 dollars well lets say i was happy that is until i remember the nigthmare of a bloaded OS. man do they put to much crap in these computers. and to top it off they do not give you a recovery cd. amazing !!!! anyways here is my options

save money and buy windows xp or install windows 2k

my question and request for feedback is

should i go with win 2k??? is win 2k ok for gamin ? eq2 thats about it.

or should i go ahead save a few bucks and get a copy of win xp.

like i said this computer is for school work and casual gamin mainly eq2 or wow

no plans of ocing the video

and i would like to split the harddrive and use linux also i dont think with this current set up i can do that thanks to the recovery tools been in a hidden partition.

any feedback or suggestion welcome.

btw im amazed at what these new video cards can do now my prior video card was a gforce 4600 ti the jump to a 6600 gt is amazing if BB had the pcie 6800 gt i would of got it

PS my main concern right now is getting a extra 512 memory. the hole os deal can wait but i would like to know what should i do.

That's the only thing you want to know, right?

Windows 2000 is a version of Windows NT which is intended for workstations and servers.

Windows XP is intended for destop use. It's of the line of Win 3.1, Win 95, Win 98, Win ME. It kinda got some of NT's guts because it made it crash less, and Win XP Pro makes a pretty decent workstation. But it's a desktop OS, which is what you need.

You have windows XP on it now right? You are entitled to an OEM copy of the operating system, so I would just take the steps necessary to obtain your rightful OEM copy, or take some shortcuts and just obtain it yourself, and use that CD to do a fresh install.

basically what i want to do is get rid of the extra stuff sony put in the computer wich i know for a fact is slowing down the computer.

now i know i can download a copy of from limewire. but i want to do it the right way. if possible i will like to get a oem copy legaly. any help on how i could get the oem copy ?

thanks very much for the help.

PS: i did find out i could get a copy of the recovery cd from sony but my fear is that this cd will be full with the extra crap they pu in it.
one final note i am very surprice on how good the computer preforms anybody out there that is looking into buying a sony i recomend the computer works great of course there is no bios twieaking or such things but the computer is very upgradable and responsive

Get your actual recovery CD.

What this will be is a customized OEM preinstall disk for Windows. You can use this as a source to modify to your own taste, using nLite or various other methods to remove or add whatever you like. http://unattended.msfn.org is a great place for such things.
