Hell, actually what is Dota? I can tell by the vids I've watched that it is a RTS but what does it stand for?

I'll take "What is Google?" for $400, Alex.

Dota is really a genre of it's own now, thanks to the success of the original game and the spin offs by other companies like League of Legends and Heroes of Newerth.

Basically both teams have a base, and turrets/towers of their own.

The object of the game is to farm money to buy items that make your character more powerful, coordinate teamwork to gank and kill the other team, and to destroy the other team's towers/turrets and their base.

It's based on the Warcraft 3 mod called Defense of the Ancients.

Dota 2 is being made by IceFrog with the backing of Valve, IceFrog is the guy who took over for Guinsoo on Dota and made it better I would say.

Guinsoo went on to make League of Legends, which I play a lot of, I never did like Heroes of Newerth.

Defense of the Ancients.

It's a "live action" RTS if you will. You move by clicking on the map just like you would any other RTS or Blizzard Game. You level your player up by attacking the opposing creep, (which are like little minions on the battlefield who attack each other) and dealing with the enemy teams heroes. You get spells that you can usually use in real time with hotkeys like a,w,d,c,t etc. There's 3 "Lanes" on the map, in a competitive scenario there's usually 5 on 5. 2 players top, 1 mid and 2 bottom and rotating as need be.

You gain experience and money by killing crepes and heroes and you can buy items to buff your stats. Each 2 has each towers in each lane. The idea is to move forward, buff and kill the other teams towers eventually moving into their base and taking it over.

The game works alot like chess actually and if you've ever scrimmed CS it is pretty similar.

League of Legends LoL and Heroes of Newerth HoN are both DOTA clones. DOTA started off as a WarCraft 3 mod and the original developer has moved to Valve to work with them on DOTA2.

EDIT: Feel like I just wrote a Wiki Article.

M.O.B.A. genre (multiplayer online battle arena), though spun off as a mod from wc3, which is a rts.

Yep, also a StarCraft map preceded DOTA's WC3 map, called Aeon of Strife, with all the gameplay/most of the mechanics in there. It's been around a loooooong time ;).
