Can't move the hard drive. Well I can, but I don't want to. It's a pain.

One ide slot...taken up by 2 devices.

How can I hook it up?
 
You need to explain the problem a little more clearly. I have no idea what the situation is or what needs fixing.
 
I have a hard drive in my computer that's a pain to move so I don't want to move it.

However, I only have one ide slot, taken up already. (I think it's called IDE anyway, I'm a computer newb. It's what other optical drives hook up to) It's using two devices which is the max.

How can I get my HD hooked up?
 
each IDE cable (the fat ribbon cable) can only have 2 devices hooked up to it.
they are called the master (at the end of the cable) and a slave ( in the mid section)
most PCs will only allow you to hook up up to 4 devices this way.
 
Alright...I KNOW THIS.

I only have ONE IDE CABLE SLOT ON MY MOBO.

1slotx2devices = 2.

2 devices max-2 in use = 0 devices available

However, I have SEVERAL open SATA slots.
 
Still not explaining what your trying to do. You have a HD and an optical drive. Ok. What are you trying to do, add more IDE drives? Move the IDE to SATA? You need to give us more info.

It SOUNDS like your trying to get another IDE HD added to your machine. In this case, you need to get a SATA -> IDE converter to be able to use the IDE drive in that system (or another IDE controller).

What are you talking about? Holy shit dude read up I said "how can I hook it up" and I explained that it was IDE and I only had one IDE hookup....How can you not understand that? Oh well you figured it out though...lol

Well thanks anyways.. I'll get that converter asap.

oh btw i'd need IDE TO SATA..all you guys linked to SATA to IDE
 
Just get a pci ide addon card, like this one

you can hookup 4 more ide harddrives with it. I have no clue why those things are so expensive i have at least 5 of those sitting around from when i bought new hard drives, used to be the thing to include them in the non oem drives i guess. If you want one let me know i have ata100 and ata133's. 10$ plus shipping. Unless you want more than 2 then like 5$ for each one.

You didn't say if you were trying to add a HD or wanting to move your current one over to the SATA ports or what. You just said you didn't want to move yours and something about your single IDE cable being full now. Nothing about "I'm trying to add a new HD" or "I want to put my current IDE HD on the SATA ports .. that would have cleared it right up from the beginning. You never mentioned what "it" is.

If your trying to add (or move your current one) a IDE HD to the SATA ports, you need either of the two adapters I linked. They take a IDE HD and adapt it over to a SATA port for the motherboard.

Implies that it's an IDE HD, but the IDE hookup was already using two devices, which is max.

I don't get how it can be simpler than that...really...I don't..that doesn't take mind ready to be honest....

You mean your card covers up the only other pci slot you have??? Since your card is PCIe i would be assuming it's covering up the other PCIe slot not the older pci slot. You should have like 3 pci slots, unless you're using some super small form mobo and in which case you probably wouldn't have a 8800 running on it.

but you do know that cards come in both PCI and PCIe flavors... right?
but cable is cheaper...

I want to add another IDE HD to my PC but I only have 1 IDE port and it has my CD-Rom and main HD attached to it.
how can I add this second IDE HD.
BTW, my PC has some unused SATA Ports.
