Web Site Hosting Questions

Do I have to register two domains if I want to allow the user to go to my site with and without adding www.? For example, would I have to register both http://www.mysite.com and http://mysite.com? I noticed that some web sites don't work if you leave out the www.

I want to host my web site from my computer at home with IIS. I have a cable modem so my IP address could change. Therefore, I need a DNS service. Does GoDaddy.com offer a good DNS service? I didn't see anything on their web site about DNS. If they aren't good, who is?

I would host it with a hosting service but I haven't quite figured out MySQL yet. I don't understand how you export the schema of the database to the host server. There isn't a DB file like Access databases have. MySQL has limited user interface but I did find a way to export the schema and all data to a .sql file.

I also like to be able to copy files to the IIS directory easily. I made a program that automatically gets the new picutres from my digital camera, updates the MySQL DB with their file names and copies them to the images folder in the IIS directory. I'll be adding new pictures all the time, so this will save me lots of time. Its nice being able to write any software I want to run on the web server.

Thanks for the help.

No, you only register mysite.com. It can be set up via your host to use www or not or both. I run across commercial sites that fail to do this all the time, as in somecompany.com doesn't work but www.somecompany.com does. The "www" part is really just a subdomain of the main site and can be named anything.

As far as the DNS service, I'm sure someone will be along to recommend one. But be aware than many (if not most) ISPs frown on end users hosting sites and forbid it in their TOS. You can probably get away with it for a while, at least if your traffic is low, but if the site starts to use large amounts of bandwidth you will likely be found out and they can cancel you for a TOS violation.

Also remember that anything that goes wrong on your end (a power outage or a fried component) will make your site inaccessible until the issues are rectified.

I use the free service of DynDNS.org and it works great. They have a paid service as well. You just have to run the updater on your pc or you can set it in your router if it supports it. If your IP changes it will redirect to your new IP address.

Hope that helps.
