So I RMA'd a brand new laptop HDD last week, the first time for me with WD... after all was said and done, guy on the phone tells me they will send me a "re-certified" drive. Needless to say, I was royally peeved for obvious reasons - but long story short, I got the replacement drive today.

Now I'm trying to figure out if it is indeed a refurb'd or if they somehow sent me a new one. I was under the impression that refurb'd drive would be labeled as such ?!? This one doesn't have any such label/marking...

I know there's a bunch of you that have done RMA with WD so please chime in with your experience...

Thanks.

I had done total of 3 RMA's with WD

1 was a new drive (im gonna assume new since it had no label stating recertified/refurb)
2 were refurbs.. Obvisouly label stating it was

I'm gonna assume and say that the phone reps are told to tell you, that you are gonna receive a re-certified drive. Since if they send you a new unit whos gonna complain rather then they promise you a new one and you get a refurb.

Check the label to see if it lists a manufacturing date.

Virtually every warranty in the known universe will state that the manufacturer may send you a new or repaired part as a replacement at their discretion.

I know with hard drives, you will sometimes get a larger capacity drive as a replacement if they do not have your exact model in stock. I have seen in some other threads that WD has been sending the 80 gig Raptors out in place of 36 gig Raptors lately.

The Rep was prolly just going with the Lowest Common Denominator theory. If you expect a refurb, and get a new, who will complain? The other way....

All of my WD returns have been refurbs. One came back with a bad bearing (sounded like it was screaming in pain), another came back as a higher capacity drive than the one that failed.

The only time I get new parts is for whole systems under warranty (like Dells). I want to know why everyone else gets the new stuff and I get the pre-owned-still-broken stuff. :(

After RMAing through Seagate, WD, and Maxtor, I have never gotten a new drive. All have been refurbs. I have 1 WD refurb still running since being replaced in 2003, a Seagate running since 2006, and the replacment Maxtor didn't make it one year, just like the first I RMA'd. Both WD and Seagate have sent me larger drives, and same capacity drives.

I just RMA'ed a WD160YS 5 year warranty and they sent me a re but the CSR said I would get a new drive so i was slightly perturbed but it will have the same warranty left and it checks out with no bad sectors and that all it good. Sent it overnight air also to my home. First time in 13 years had a drive fail.

RMA'd 3 WD drives...150 gig raptor came back as a brand new 160 gig raptor (149 gig formated), a 400 gig that came back as a brand new 500 gig, and a 500 gig that came back as a recert 500 gig...The recert is very clearly labeled as such.

Every drive I've ever RMA'd with WD has been replaced with a refurb, this includes one personal experience and about two dozen business experiences (though for resellers they might always give refurbs). My personal drive was a 250GB SE16 sata drive. It started developing bad sectors about 9 months in, Cross shipped an RMA, sent them my old drive back in the box I recieved, was completely painless. The drives I RMA'd for the bussiness I used to work for ran the gamut from 40GB WD relics (that were still under warraty :D) to 500GB caviars and even a raptor, they all came back as refrubs, a few of the 40GBs might have come back as 80s but I can't recall.

I've never had a problem with WDCs RMA department though, top notch
