on my wife's pc she got a virus and all the keys were quite messed up. i went ahead and formatted the dell 5100 inspiron and still some keys are not working. the fn key, caps lock, ctrl, shift... maybe more. either way i cannot figure out something more than software was effected but who knows. i went into the bios and it listed japan as the keyboard layout but would not allow me onto that field to change it. i went to the dell website and flashed the bios to no avail. do i need to do some battery removal and such and then do it or what... i would be using question marks more regularly but cannot. i can use the on-screen keyboard and all of these features work fine. any help would be great. thx.

AHH CONFICKER VIRUS!!!! turn everything off!! burn it!! blow it up!! destroy ALL THE EVIDENCE!!

Ok, ive calmed down, have you been downloading any new drivers for the computer? I doubt its a virus, but you might want to run your computer with avast antivirus or something like that, it spots many virus'. Does anything else not work besides the keyboard? It might be old age, hardware issues, or like i said before, drivers. I doubt anyone would waste their time coming out with a virus that disables the shift key. But you never know..

its pretty much that whole bank of keys on the left side.. other than the tab key. like i said it is fresh off a format so it does not have a virus right now.

what happened... it was working fine and the wife was doing some online homework and then the keys started acting funny. many more of them weren't working. i didn't know what it was so i assumed virus. so i ran all kind of antivirus and malware programs. it found a couple viruses so i was sure that was the problem. but the problem persisted after i formatted the laptop. so since i just formatted it and put all the correct drivers i dont think its a virus anymore or drivers. i think its a virus that somehow changed my bios info or something. i know this sounds silly but i cant think of anything else. i guess its possible it had a hardware failure and the viruses had been there the whole time but that also seems unlikely.

Try resetting the CMOS and then a reformat!! If that dont fix it its something internal!!

uhm... maybe try another keyboard? When whole sections of your keyboard stop working, it's probably the keyboard controller on the keyboard.

I'm betting that something got spilled into the keyboard. It would be pretty difficult for a virus to know exactly what settings to change in the BIOS to cause just your keyboard to mess up since every BIOS out there is different. Now they can corrupt ALL the settings and keep you system from booting at all, but in that case, a simple CMOS reset is all that's needed to be up and ready to go again. So it would be pointless.

i am 100% sure that nothing got on the keyboard. none of the keys are stuck. nothing physical appears to be wrong with teh keypad of the laptop. ive got a usb keyboard in teh closet i will get out and see where we go from there.

Are you sure she didnt set it up accidentaly for some weird like UK keyboard or sometin?

all keyboard settings are correct IN WINDOWS. like stated in the first post when i go into the bios it says the keyboard setting is JAPAN and i cannot change it. it just skips past that selection when i scroll through. i'm assuming this is the root of all the problems i'm having but don't know how to change it.

how do i clear the cmos on this laptop? i can find where the battery is i guess. then do i need to do anything else or should that do it?
