Here’s an odd one. Buried in a press release from Virgin announcing a new DRM-free music service, the company stated it would start imposing temporary suspensions of internet access to persistent file sharers using information provided by Universal Music.

This will involve implementing a range of different strategies to educate file sharers about online piracy and to raise awareness of legal alternatives. They include, as a last resort for persistent offenders, a temporary suspension of internet access. No customers will be permanently disconnected and the process will not depend on network monitoring or interception of customer traffic by Virgin Media.

Yeah they're gonna impose temporary suspensions, like they have the authority to do so. :rolleyes:
 
So let me get this straight, you pay these people (Virigin) money, i.e. you are thier customer, however they think they're loyalties lie with Universal and will believe them any there is nothing you can do about it. Wonder if they keep billing you while your account is suspended.
 
Unless they put this in the fine print when you sign up with them, I don't even see how that would be legal.

They'll just change thier TOS without notifying you. Remember how it says "subect to change" in the fine print?
 
Note that this is reference to the U.K; U.S. ISPs have stated they'll refuse to shut off subscribers service without a court order.

Just any FYI for anyone not really reading the article...

They bought the Telewest media arm (ISP, cable TV, phone) about 2/3 years ago and well... shite service (when everything works its great but try to interact with their support...)
 
It figures. If RIAA, MPAA and friends can't get ISP to shut users down, they to start their own ISP.
 
as i do not use p2p should not affect me (use other downloads that do not require shareing )

VM rocks 50MB/s (that reminds me i need to nag them as they still got some intermittent problems when downloading at max speed drops the speed to 2mb for 2-5mins and does that then norm every 1hr or so)

Not quite... NTL was the old company name. They had also bought up most of the other UK cable companies like Telewest, Blueyonder, etc.

NTL wanted a better name to compete in the Subscription TV world, as well as the broadband market. So they purchased rights to the "Virgin" brandname, and Branson gets a 10% (?) state in the company.

So it is really still NTL, but now using the more recognisable VirginMedia brand name.

(Note also - Virgin Records was sold off long ago. Beardy Branson's empire covers all kinds of things - including Planes, Trains and Automobiles. http://www.virgin.co.uk/home.aspx)


So - this is an ISP trying to "be different" by giving away music, while at the same time letting Universal hand them RIAA notices. Just means I make sure I avoid any Universal products if I "accidentally" use a torrent. :D

You could get nailed whether you actually use p2p or not, or if you are that perfect, totaly legit PC user or if you don't have an internet connection or even if you don't own a computer. The Entertainment Cartel could care less whether they are right or wrong. You remember the stories right?

The removing of your rights will allways eventually effect you.
 
And how much will the fee be? No mentions of that. Can't think this will be good.
