My buddy works for the movie industry, he has credits on some pretty big movies like, Matrix and CatWoman (don't laugh, it was a paycheck for him). He does CGI/amination. Whatever that is. :p

When he is working a 'gig' the equipment is supplied for him. But to do stuff at home he has a dual P3 1ghz with 2.5 gb RAM. It has been giving him problems lately and i recommended that he upgrade. This guy is very good at what he does but he is not technical about hardware. He told me his current system was AMD. I was like

I am thinking at minimum mobo/cpu/ram.

So we need a dual P4 or Opteron board. Thats my first question. Is there a consensus 'best' board out there? I know there will be choices so post up your reasons and we'll go from there.

second question: is there anyway for him to keep using the 2.5 gb of SDRAM? I told him no. But i want to be sure. As i said I really don't know what he does so SDRAM might be Ok for what he does, especially since he has so much of it. Well, please chime in on this topic too.

Its has been a while since i have posted in the hardware section. My knowledge on general hardware (mobos/cpus etc) has fallen off dramatically. I am glad you guys are here. :D

oh, pricerange? hmmm $500-1000usd?

perhaps this belongs in the video artwork section? can i get a mod move if necesarry, thanks!

Processor: I would look atleast a P4 3.2-3.4 GHz. If possible, get a Dual Xeon 2.8-3.2 GHz or Dual Operton @ 1.8-2.0 Ghz. I heared Intel processors are good for video but i could be wrong.

Mobo: For the P4, an Asus Mobo will do just fine. Maybe a P4C800 Deluxe. For the dual processors, Tyan makes amazing server/workstation motherboards for both Xeon and Operton.

Memory: 1Gb min and 2+ max. I think he will need new memory to run on his new system (ie. DDR PC3200 for all mobos and maybe DDR ECC Registered for Tyan mobos).

With all this talk about hardware... no one has mentioned his software requirements. The thread title is video editing... but you mentioned his CGI work as well. Does he already have the software? And will the software be optimized to work best with Intel or AMD?

Video editing software such as Premiere, Vegas, Avid, etc... are video editing apps... while CGI animation apps such as Maya and Lightwave are for computer generated animation. What projects does your friend do at home? What exactly will he be doing?

Back to hardware... Certain 3D animation apps require powerful video cards with full Open GL support. Check the hardware requirements for each software package.

Thats true. Ull also need a good video card (ie Nvidia Quadro FX or ATI FireGL). To keep up, u might need a major update, which requires more $$$.

I have heard him mention Premiere, Avid, Maya and Lightwave. I am not sure exactly what he does but he said he had a pretty big hand in the Matrix scene where Neo is fighting all the Smiths with the pole thingy.

thank you for the input so far. I am also doing my own research so its not just me being lazy :D
