Today I recived an asus k8v-x motherboard, hoping it wouldn't conflict with my 6800gt like I thought my msi k8n neo platnum. I start the computer, recompile my kernel, reboot recompile the nvidia kernel module, reboot, then start up ut2004. Crashes on the single player intro movie. Before I had ordered this motherboard, I had tried my leadtek a400 tdh geforce 6800gt in another computer, where it worked fine, without any crashes. So what's my problem? The CPU's obviously stable, since I've done quite a bit of compiling on it without any problems.

Specs:
ASUS K8V-X (Via K8T800)
AMD Athlon 64 3000+
Leadtek A400 TDH GeForce 6800GT
1GB RAM
Gentoo + gentoo-sources-2.6.12-r9 (32-bit)
Windows XP (mouse hasn't worked since I changed the motherboard)
Antec SmartPower 400watt (18a on the 12v rail)
 
When you say it crashes, does it crash the game back to desktop, or does your system restart?
 
No, it just freezes, showing one frame for eternity, or until I press the restart button.
 
hmmm i am suspecting it is your PSU, or your ram. I don't think the motherboard ia affecting your graphic card.
 
Despite what the doc said in the last thread, I'm seriously thinking that the reason I have this problem on my computer and not on my other computer is because my other computer bottlenecked the card to the point that it wasn't even stressed.

I've had the PSU for about a year without problems. The RAM I've bought at diffrent times, the earliest one, a 256MB DIMM I bought in 2002. No problems there either.
 
Well following advice from leadtek, I'm using only 1 stick of RAM. My bigest stick of RAM is 512MB, so right now I have only 512MB. Seems stable, but I'll have to test it some more. (Fun testing btw.) Why would multiple sticks of RAM cause problems with a GeForce 6800GT but not a Radeon 9800 Pro? Could this be a problem with my newcastle CPU, which contains the memory controller?
 
Have you interchanged the RAM sticks to make sure that they both work by themselves?

Some of your issues resemble a ram problem.

How so?

My memory:
256MB PC3200
256MB PC3200
512MB PC3200 (One currently in my computer)

I always thought it strange that one of the 256MB was marked as PC2700 by my old mobo. Never tried fixing the issue because my perfomance at PC2700 was acceptable.Never checked what my new mobo thinks it is. I have run memtest86,a few times in the past, never finding an error in the RAM.

Edit: Here is the email that I recived from leadtek:
How big is the power supply in your system? We recommend a minimum of 350W.
Please also make sure the power connector is not share with other devices in the system.
Check if you are using more than 1 sticks of system memory, please test the problem again with only 1 stick system memory installed. Sometime memory timing issue will cause the similar problem.
Is it possible to test the card in another system to see if the problem follow the card?

hmmm sounds like that one stick is trying to run at PC3200 when its rated for 2700
 
I have an msi board with an evga 6800 card,that would lock up in 2004 and doom3 till I went in to the bios and set the agp memmory size to 256 meg which is double the memmory on my card now every thing works fine.
