friend of mine is running a AMD 64 4000+, 4 gigs ram and a 19" LCD at 1440x900. what would be a decent card for him to upgrade to right now he has onboard. (pretty much anythign will be better) he plays left 4 dead, cs:s type games if that helps

for $100, i don't think you could do better than a 4830 or 9800gt. at that res, those cards should do fine. any higher cards might be cpu bottlenecked, so it's not worth the money.

Assuming he has PCI-E, an 8800GT is about the max he can make use of.
If he can clock the CPU to 2.7GHz, and it is dual core, he will get about about 80% of the full performance from the gfx card.

If he has a single core CPU, he wont need more than a 9600GT but framerate will suffer to the extent that he may not be able to play some games at native res.
His current games should be fine.
