Vein

Been playing this for months. it's a definite step up in the realism department but very much still unfinished.
That is what I gather
Do you think it has potential to be a great game? Do you think the devs have a good chance to achieve that based on what they've done so far?

It's already a great game. They release updates every few months fleshing it out even more. The "story" is currently forgettable. The main survival game loop is excellent though which is what most people are looking for in a game like this.

Thanks
I'll buy it after its matured and gotten closer to v1.0
Is the gunplay decent? I was pretty satisfied with ranged and melee combat in Sons of the Forest.

Try the demo, it is just a level and map limit if I remember right. Ive not played it much myself since getting the full version in Jan or so. It has its jank but is basically a first person version of Zomboid type games.

Will do

Do you look for a house to be your base of operations or just kind of keep moving and building up?
A base is critical as you'll eventually need to establish power and water generation to survive and crafting is an essential component of the game. The game provides water sources via a few different locations/methods that can be useful to build near. You'll also want to be somewhat close to an urban center for resource gathering.

You can build to a point fairly quickly where the entire zombie mechanic can almost be ignored. The survival loop is the core game mechanic.

I actually just noticed they pushed a big update a few days ago with a new area of the map opened. Might be a good excuse for a re-roll. Building new bases is always fun.

I bought it, installed it, ran around for a bit, went "huh, thats neat, its seeming to aim for a zomboid level detail with first person..."

Then I uninstalled it to wait for a few more patches, because I dont want to burn myself out on it too early, like I did with 7d2d. Very impressed with what I did in the bit I played a month or so ago, following dev updates and waiting for one that ticks me over the edge of deciding to really go for it.

So is the idea to build a base from scratch, upgrade an existing house or either?

Upgrading an existing structure is the only viable option at the moment. Finding cool spots to fortify is a major part of the appeal. There is quite the variety of residential houses, many with things like basements, detached/attached garages, multiple floors etc. There are plenty of commercial structures, gas stations, pharmacies, stores, etc that often have generators or other facilities already. Even bigger industrial type buildings such as power plants, water treatment facilities, municipal garages, even a fairly large prison (one of the best loot locations in the game hint hint) and a variety of other places. The sky is the limit.

Another nice thing is you can take things from one location and move them to another. Found a cool house but it doesn't have a clothes washer? Just grab one and bring it back. Same with furniture, generators, storage racks. Hell slushie machines, ice cream coolers, whatever you find. One great example is you will come across a park that has some large solar panels that I bet would sure come in handy....

Wow sounds really cool. I was kinda burned out on survival games but have been wanting to play one in a modern world like this where looting is a big part of the gameplay loop
