Variable resistor for LED mod

Hello, I am planning to mod one of those vantec fanbus type things that has 3 led's on the front panel. What I want to do is add a knob to it so that you can dim the 3 led's. Couldn't I just break the connection on one leg of each of the 3 led's and route that through a variable resistor? Never tried it before so I figured I'd ask if it's doable.

do you want the resistor to control anything else?

if not, then your dead on. you need a 0-500 ohm variable resistor, and you can easly do it off 12v with the LEDs in series. one end lead goes to the +V, the middle lead goes to the + of the LED's. then the - of the LEDs gets grounded.

nah its just for the led's.. thanks for the info :D now to find a place to buy them from :eek:
 
online, or B&M? if you want a walk in store, and you live in the US, pretty much your only option is the CrapShack.

internet is much easier...

modding sites like xoxide.com or frozencpu.com will have them but expensive

superbrightleds.com is a good balance

but digikey or mouser will have the best bulk prices. but if you only want 3...
 
Are you trying to find the LED's or the potentiometer? Ebay has pretty good prices on LED's, in the quantities you'll find there you'll end up paying about as much as you would from an online modding retailer, but you'll have a bunch of LED's left over. You can also get the potentiometer from ebay easily, but you'll be hard pressed to buy one in single unit quantities just about anywhere online unless you already meet their minimum order requirement.
