V8 Problem

Alright, so a few months ago I got the Coolermaster V8. I installed the 775 bracket, and after a while of using my computer, it would shut off, I tried several alternatives, including laying the computer on its side, and I think it still shut off. It was had to be a CPU problem, because I put on stock cooling, and it was fine. So, my question is, what needs to be done so I can use the computer without it shutting down randomly.

And just to add, the temps were great, in the 30C range, the plastic was off the cooler, I used the spacers that came with it and then some identical ones I got from Home Depot.


Also, the CPU is a Q9450.

what were your full load temps? since idle temps on c2d/c2q processors are useless..
 
Did you try cleaning and reapplying thermal paste? Is your thermal paste still good? Could have dried out and lost its heat conductive capability.

Did you make sure all the bracket screws were in all the way? If they're not done evenly or fully air pockets can get between the cpu and cooler and ruin your pasting job. My V8 was a little big to handle solo, I'd suggest getting some help if you haven't already to make sure once you push the cooler gainst the chip it doesn't budge until all the screws are in. I should've had someone help but mine's still chugging along from when I did it solo. I didn't use the paste that came with it though, used AS Ceramique instead.

And I'm pretty sure the bracket screws were in all the way, I ended up needing help tightening the back screws. If the problem happens to be the air pockets, should I use Ceramique?

I don't think you can assume load temps are good because your idle temps are good - you have to test and measure them.

Getting air pockets is not because of the TIM usually, its because of the application and mounting method. Have a search for recommended method.

Just to make it clear, idle temps do not mean anything. The temp sensors do not provide accurate readings until the chip starts to heat up, where temperature becomes a more important factor.

Could you describe your pasting/mounting technique in full just to be sure everything is being done correctly? I'll outline how I installed my V8 for comparison purposes.

1. Clean CPU and V8 surface with rubbing alcohol
2. Apply a thin ribbon of thermal compound to your chip in the direction that matches the chip design. Don't quote me on this but I believe the Quad's use a horizontal line when the triangle is on bottom left while the i7 uses a verticle line.
3. Tint the surface of the V8. Do this by putting a small amount of TIM on the V8 surface and rubbing both clockwise and counterclockwise until the TIM is spread around. Put your finger in a plastic bag so you don't contaminate it with your hand's oils. Wipe the TIM off with a lint free cloth, similar to an eye glass's lense cloth. Don't touch the surface of the V8 now that it's tinted.

The next part use whatever method works best for you, I'm just saying what I did.

4. Keep the V8 upside down so the mounts are facing upwards.
5. Lower your motherboard on to the V8, applying firm pressure on the mount area. If the cpu and V8 seperate after they initially "squash" the TIM, there will be air pockets and it would be best to start over.
6. Keeping pressure on the V8 mount area, attach the backplate and screw it in. Turn each screw 2 turns before moving to the screw diagonal and then adjacent. Keep doing this until all screws are tight. Just like tightening car wheels.

The part that a partner would help a lot at is someone needs to support the motherboard while it's upside down, as the stress of it just hanging there could damage internal circuitry if it bends too much.
 
Alright, I'll work on installing it with the method you posted, once I get the cooler working, should I just go and test it by gaming, or let it sit in the BIOS for a while and see if it shorts?

Get it to the BIOS first, if there's some insanely high temp you'd notice there before booting to OS. If it looks good kick it online and hope for no auto-shutoff. If everythings running in windows and it's not showing some insanely high temp, run prime 95 on blend for a couple minues and watch the temps, if they start climbing too high, stop the tests and shutdown your computer.

Post a picture of your mount job if you can. You said you used some home depot spacers, they might have something to do with it.

If the V8 still isn't cooling like it's supposed to, there has to be some structural defect. This could be a warped base or backplate, cracked heat pipes, or maybe the fan is dead.


P.S. I'm pretty sure you didn't forget this, but did you plug in the V8's fan into the mobo cpu fan slot? And I'm not sure it makes much a difference since the fan moves quite a bit of air, you have the fan speed dial turned to full rpm correct? Should spin about 1900-2000 rpm.
 
Is it a for sure heat problem? I'm not entirely sure of the temps that I was getting, but I think if they were really high, I'd remember, but who knows, and the fan works, I had it plugged in to the mobo, on full, also the spacers I had used from Home Depot, were used after the second or third time, so not sure if it was that or not.


Should I contact Coolermaster and see if they can help?

Were you able to get to prime95 using the above application method or did it just shutdown on you? If you made it, what were your temps?
