UT2k4 fps problems...

I play ut2k4 competitively and since I got my new 6800 gt to replace my ti 4200 and I feel that I am getting unnaceptable fps. I have tried running all of the settings as low as they could possibly go and I still get 30-40 fps. What is my problem? And what are good settings to run my game at with my system.

p4 b 2.4 @ 2.7
512mb ram
geForce 6800 gt @ultra
Soundblaster Live!

Thanks

You should be able to run with the settings maxed. I have slightly less powerful pc with a Radeon 9200, and I am able to run all the settings maxed at 1280x1024. Dunno what the problem could be...make sure you're running with the latest drivers (though that shouldn't be an issue).

Maybe remnants of the old drivers are giving you issues?

I think you want... the Detonator Destroyer? Anyone remember what that program was called?

Anyway, yeah, could be leftover driver remnants.

driver cleaner. you can goto the video card forum and read the FAQ on how to use it properly.

I will give it a try. I am currently using the 61.77s. I also noticed that a process called system idle process, is taking up 99 CPU at all times. I am wondering what this is and if it suppose to do that.

Its supposed to :p

the idle process is basically the opposite of your cpu load. it shouldn't be at 99% while playing a game, but if nothing else is doing anything it will show the unused processing power.

haha, i just lived up to my name. Still working on getting it working. Any more ideas.

UT2k4 is VERY CPU dependent. With my AthlonXP system I would see frequent dips to 25-30fps in combat, upgrading from an 9800 Pro to a 6800GT barely did anything. I upgraded to an Athlon64 and still sometimes my framerate will dip to the 30s when I am in intense combat.

hehe its either some hardware or software conflict prolly, I average 90 FPS on my system all the time in this game you should be able to do the same. even in intense combat it never goes below 40-50 fps.

resolution/iq settings?

same here, my 6800GT runs ut2k4 like poo. Ive tried driver cleaner, using different sets of drivers, and still nothing, this is at 1024x768, maxed settings no aa/af.

Same here using the system in my sig (except the CPU is @3.2 not 3.5 at the mo) and this is at all settings max'd out and 1600x1200.

Interestingly enough there are little to no gains by turning the options down.

EDIT: You have 512MB of RAM. I think another 512 would prolly help a load.

EDIT 2: Are both you guys with low FPS using non 400FSB P4's??? THe 400Mhz FSB would help a lot too guys, memory bandwidth is essential.

Didnt really read all of what everyone else said but you probably have a cpu bottleneck. If that is your fps in onslaught I'd say that's normal for your cpu. The good thing is if you juice the graphics up real nice and high you'll probably still get the 30-40fps.

More ram would alleviate stutter or jerk... but thats a bit different than fps. More than 512 does help a lot in this game. If you don't see it yet.... you guessed it... this game is heavy on your cpu/mem subsystem.

Oh well, until your ready to conquer these things, I'd say keep the video jacked up since you seem to be justifying these statements... where lowering graphics does little. Only place I could have gone wrong is in assuming you are playing onslaught like the rest of us. I've gone back and read some people's posts and we might be on different pages. For instance, there is no averaging 90fps in onslaught.... NO WAY.

No one mentions onslaught except you. Overall my system does average 90fps or there abouts. Generally its way higher but drops here and there.

Everyone likes to pick people apart here. I said we may very well be on different pages and that I "assumed" (look it up) that the poster might be speaking of the same because of the fps figure and the fact that it IS the most popular game choice.

You can pick on semantics all you want but I bet the poster may very well be talking about onslaught and getting the right numbers while all you 90fps people absolutely have to be talking about deathmatch, capture the flag or what have you. I realized I might have made too many assumptions so I layed them out on the table. Sorry I said "like the rest of us" when I meant most people playing UT. Maybe I should have stuck with the token "update your drivers" post but I knew that would be taken care of.

Anyways, one thing is for certain, we need to know what he is talking about to really go anywhere with this.

30-40fps in Deathmatch? -> Problem
30-40 fps in Onslaught? -> Upgrade CPU/Ram or go on with life

ut2k4 must not depend on vcards too much. i play w/ all settings at their highest, 1600x1200, and 0xAA/0xAF right now. i am not sure what type of fps i am getting, but i find it fully playable. i guess i will have to do a fraps run.
