Using ChatGPT to make an app

I have no knowledge of programing.

I've heard ChatGPT can build websites and write programs based on prompts.

Problem I want to solve. On my PC I can use the Hosts file to block X and other websites that suck me in and waste my time. Every time the world goes crazy I get back on X to find out what's going on, and my God, it sucks me right back in. But on my android phone, I can't access the hosts file. The apps that block websites want to access everything on my phone and I don't like that.

So I thought, this is really simple program. I just want a program, an app, maybe a firefox extension, that can block X like how I do on my computer.

I asked ChatGPT to write a program last night, and it's talking about testing it, and then submitting it for review for the app store.

I don't know shit about what I'm doing. Any comments, advice would be appreciated.

Trying to side load a vibe coded app is an awful long work around for existing tools.

The baked in 'Digital Wellbeing' can limit apps natively. Websites - I think you just need to find the right app for it.

If you have an addiction to something, preventing access to it builds up that tension and aggression to want it back. You need more of a discipline of only at a certain time at night are you allowed to browse. Set a timer if you will. Could always delete your account, not really preventing you from access but makes it so the extra effort might help you realize you need to walk away.

Its pretty annoying and rigorous to run a custom app on android. you basically need a unlocked rooted device.

Chatgpt is pretty bad at coding, if you have no experience it will not be possible to make it. There are vibe coding tools that could get you closer, Claude is better.

The easiest solution for you is by far just practice some discipline. Or just delete the app thats a problem and pretend it doesnt exist.

Here's what I've found over the past year or so (professional Software Engineer speaking):

AIs are *really* good when you ask them for solutions to well understood and well defined problems. Where it starts to fall flat is if you ask for something that is impossible, in which case it will *absolutely* invent an answer that looks like it should work, but doesn't.

As an example, I recently had to make a small app for work to do processing within a bunch of word documents. 95% of what the AI came up with was technically correct, but there was one feature I kept asking the AI to implement, and it kept giving answers that involved interop calls that simply do not exist. When I eventually got smart and asked the AI if what I was doing was *possible*, instead of asking for a *solution*, it correctly responded that I couldn't do what I was attempting the way I was attempting to do it.

So when you read articles about lawyers using AIs and the AI giving references to non-existent cases, that's why: if you ask for a solution, the AI will give it, even if it doesn't exist. I'm guessing the AIs were trained in a way that rewards them for positive answers, biasing them in that direction.

the agentic part that control the AI more and more do that feedback loop now too, it tries to compile and will see if api function do not exist now and once the program compile it run it itself and look if it work.

For very small app, that are well contained to be only used for you as a tool, it tend to be there yet (the opus 4.6/Codex 5.4 type) and Claude Mythos seem to be a complete step change, what we could have expected to take a whole year level of improvement above those.

Just use a parental control program and you will be able to block whatever you want.

Most of them will block a ton of web pages be default and you have to white-list everything you want allowed.

If you already have a paid for security package that you can also install on your phone, you can just set it up and be good to go.
