Upgrading a Dell 1000

I just want a basic laptop to do: Word/Excel, chat, surf, and watch dvds. So I was thinking this Inspiron 1000 is a good buy but I don't like the idea of a celeron processor and they don't offer a p4 with it. Is it possible to drop a p4 in this laptop on my own?
 
For what you want to do, that celeron should be just fine. The 1000 is not meant to be any kind of performer at all, just a value solution for mobile computing. I don't know if you can drop a P4 in there or not. I don't know what Dell has done to the bios. Also, if you notice, the case has a different design than all the other laptops so heat might be an issue as well. By your choosing the 1000 i'm guessing you want one as inexpensive as possible but if you really want that P4 you might as well move up to the 1150. Otherwise I think you might be out of luck.
 
About the 1150, size matters somewhat to me and my mom has the 1150. Its something like 1.7 inches and the 1000 is 1.3 or 1.4.

I'll probably just wait until I can score a really good deal on something. I don't need a laptop for anything...more of a want to do wireless surfing and not have to bring my computer home for winter/spring breaks
 
The 1000 is 1.46" thick.

The mobile celeron in the 1000 has a TDP of 35W. It should work with a P4 (edit: P4-M) of the same or less TDP. But at that point you're already paying to upgrade it and you can find more options in other models or brands. You can get the Inspiron 600m (1.2", 5.3lbs, much better laptop) sometimes for under $1000, for example. Look on deal boards like fatwallet.com.
 
I agree with the 600m. I have one and I use it as my main system now. It's a great blend of performance and portability. It's got great battery life, it's quite and for the most part runs pretty cool. Some people complain about the left palmrest getting warm but it's because thats where the hard drive is and it's really not that bad.
 
I guess so. I can get a d400/600/800 for cheap from my school. Its like 1300 for a d400 with everything i would need (1.4ghz, 512mb, 40gig, dvd, 802.11b/g internal) or for like the same price a d600 with sxga+ and a modular battery (rest of the specs the same).

I guess scratching up another 400-500 bucks is worth it.
