My set up now.
Gigabyte ga-7vax
Athlon 2600xp 333mhz
1024mb pc-2700
Bfg 6800oc

I feel the need to upgrade my cpu to an athlon 64 3200. I know I have to get a new mobo and ram. Will I see a big jump in perfermance? Right now I can play any game with high settings with no choppiness. Will I notice any difference with the naked eye or will it only show in benchmarking scores? Just looking for opinions from users that upgraded their athlon xp to the athlon 64.

not a 50% increase, but definitly a noticable improvement in cpu-bound situations
(i went from a 2500+ to 3200+.. let's just say i like it ;) )
 
I dont think there is a %50 increase in speed, more like 25-30% but it will be noticable though...
 
Noticable, but personally I wouldn't upgrade if I had an 2600+. I moved to 3200+ from a 1900+...
 
So you think I should just stick with my 2600xp? If I wait another year I could get a better and faster system cheaper.
 
Well if you would wait for a year you would have to chuck this system out as i look at it cause you would definately upggrade to a PCIe based solution and most probably with DDR II.

The way i look at it now is that CPU is bottleneck for your card. I would go for the upgrade.
 
The last statement is not entirely true

Unless Mr. Switch knows something that the otheres in the community doesn't (if he is on the CPU dev.team or something like that).

DDRII is not on the AMD roadmap.

However if U dont want to do a full upgrade now listen to Eclipse he usually have sound advices. I don't know how much the upgrade would do for U. But I do know that if you want to upgrade in the next year Its gonne cost.

U will need:

New PSU (ATX 2.0)
New CPU (prob a Venice core AMD 64 [new s939])
New MoBo
And new Ram
And finally a spanking new Graphic card.

And since U allready bought allthat stuff get a Box - DVD rom and a HDD as well and U have a good secondary 2500+ instead of slaughtering it to get parts for the new machine.

Your old system still have some life in it but doesn't have much of a value anymore(if U try to sell it), therefore I would either save the money and buy a new machine in half a year OR upgrade your XP to a 2600 M-XP ad OC it (and try to live with it till the new standards come down in price AND probably get the new machine in half a year anyway :D LoL).

To buy a new AMD/AGP now would not save U much in the end (the graphic card yes right now at least - but other then that ???) but since youre not in a bad situation as it is I would wait and see and get the real deal in half a year to a year...
