I have an Acer built pc
specs:
a64 4000+ (Orleans)
motherboard is no idea but model #F690VGM supports pci-e x16 no 2.0
a whopping 250w psu!
and a built in x1200 that really can't play much.

I want to upgrade do abit of upgrading but it turns into the whole ooo I want this and that. where all I NEED is a new psu and vid card..... I do have a Thermaltake Purepower 430w, if that'll even work with the newer vid cards. so with that my max display I believe is 1440x900. pretty much just trying to go for the whole best 'bang for my buck' still trying to decide if I want to add a64 x2 to the mix. so what is the best route to take besides trashing it and starting over. my budget isn't that great so cheaper is better! but throw options so I may try and work it out

Forget the Purepower 430W. The only decent Thermaltake PSUs are part of their Purepower RX and Toughpower lines.

For a PSU, this is probably the best bang for your buck deal on a PSU you can afford:
Antec Earthwatts 500W PSU - $50

For your resolution, a single 9600GSO is more than enough:
BFG Tech BFGE96384GSOOCE GeForce 9600 GSO 384MB PCI-E Video Card - $110

CPU Wise, a new dual core AM2 CPU isn't that much money:
AMD Athlon64 X2 4600+ CPU - $56

So if you go with a CPU, GPU, and PSU upgrade, you're gonna spend about $220. Not bad. But priority wise, get that PSU ASAP. It's a limited time sale.

Oh how much RAM do you have?

I've got 2 gigs. and running XP pro so should be enough? and ty

well now that i've slept on it.. if I purchase a new cpu i'll have one just hanging around so tempted to just sell the mobo/cpu and ram to a friend and just upgrade that too... but there i go again with the 'want want want' blah!!!!! so perhaps the 4600+ that was suggested plus mobo and ram.. for motherboard just basic, don't need sli or any of that... ram 2gb will work but if 4gb is around my price range then cool cause i'd like to try vista some time. if all works out my price range should be about $410 give or take

If you have a definite buyer (at a reasonable price), sell your stuff and get new stuff. ;) Danny gave you some great suggestions. However, let us know if you decide to sell and need more suggestions.

appreciate the help.. so far I'm still in the works with a friend but he keeps going back and forth so, if all goes well this is what it'll be

Antec Earthwatts 500W PSU
BFG Tech BFGE96384GSOOCE GeForce 9600 GSO 384MB PCI-E Video Card
AMD Athlon64 X2 4600+ CPU - $56 (the 65nm 'on sale' wahoo save $4!)
G.SKILL 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 800 (PC2 6400)
still trying to find a motherboard preferably a micro so i can still use this case. don't need anything spectacular just able to use above and fit vid card
