Ok, my current system is grossly out of date IMO (see sig) and am looking to upgrade. I priced out all the gear from Newegg for around $1400 to include a E6700, 8800GTS, 2gb ddr2, etc. Would I be ok upgrading now or should I wait? I've been out of the computer loop for a bit.

I've been reading the forums but haven't really gathered any real data to help me. I just don't want to buy a new system and have all new stuff come out the next week or month.

If I were you, I'd wait. The FX is still a very good processor. But it depends on what you want to do with the upgrade. Are you desperate for more video editing power? Photoshop?

Just wait for the K8L. It's coming this summer and it's a quadcore. From the early benchmarks, it's 20%-50% faster than the Core 2 Duo.

If I were you and I want to upgrade, I'd at least get a quadcore.

I'll just wait then. The reasons for my upgrading are numerous. I bought STALKER a month ago, it was a slideshow for the most part. I just got Adobe Creative Suite 3 Design and it's fairly system intensive as well. I attended a conference a couple weeks ago and we were using a brand new Mac Pro with twin Xeons and 2gigs of ram, it was really smooth which got me interested in a Mac system.

I've been playing WoW for the last 2 years pretty much exclusively and it runs fine with my system which is why I never upgraded. I've got 3+ good years out of this system but I need the extra power of dual cores for the things I do.

On a side note, WoW is evil. It's sucked up way too much time in my life. My wife plays too but not nearly as much.

NOFI, but that FX-53 is basicly a multi unlocked 4000+ single core, its not a slow CPU, but "very good processor" would seem a bit OTT to me

Starwarrior, i just moved from 939 to 775 myself, i ditched my x2 3800 for a e4300, which is running along at 2.4 GHz right now, i plan on putting in a quad core q6600 when they drop to $266 in Q3, you could consider doing the same. If AMDs phenom CPUs turn out to be a significantly better buy then a q6600 ill only have to swap mobo, since both platforms use DDR2

Are you still using AGP or PCI-E?

If you are having problems with games. A new video card would do you much better than upgrading the CPU and mobo if you have PCI-E that is.

Unfortunately I'm using AGP which is why I haven't updated that for so long. I'm in a real slump right now because this system deperately needs updated but with new releases looming on the horizon, I'm stuck with this for a bit.

In this situation I would probably try to pick up a 1950pro AGP or something.

OR sell the motherboard for a one with PCI-E and get a video card.

wow..if your going ati.. never never get their PRO line.. trust me.. Ive made the mistake.

XT line is much better..

I made the mistake of upgrading too soon. Honestly, this C2D system @ 2.8Ghz and 2GBs of RAM isn't much faster than my XP 3200+ and 1Gb of RAM. I should have waited a little longer.
