Hey guys,

I have a 4870x2 in my rig, was folding great. I got another regular 4870 and dropped it in, had a hell of a fight installing the display drivers kept getting a NO_MORE_IRP_STACK_LOCATIONS error while trying to install the latest ATI drivers. I kept fiddling around and got the drivers to install alright.

So to recap, I have left my rig EXACTLY the same just added the second card and re-installed the drivers. On all 3 of my GPU's I'm now getting unstable machines and its really got my hung up.

Ideas on how to get folding again?

I have little Ati experience but there's only few people on at this time so I'll ask a few very basic questions. Did you try running at stock clock frequencies? Are the flags for each GPU client unique in designation? Try using the -gpu 0 flag for the first client, -gpu 1 flag for the second client and -gpu 2 flag for the third client. Also, the -forceasm flag is ordinarily used for CPU clients and have no idea if there's any affect on a GPU client.

Thank you for the quick reply APOLLO!

I have both cards running at stock clocks, The flags for each GPU are indeed unique - I actually tried using -gpu 0, -gpu 1, -gpu 2 that also had the same result. The only reason I tried moving the -gpu X number up was to see if it would make any diffrence. I have also tried if with the -forceasm and without both still gave me UNSTABLE_MACHINE but you can guess that I was hoping the -forceasm would let it run. Like I said, no such luck.

Any other ideas? This is a nightmare, my 4870x2 was folding really well for the last 2-3months. I dropped in the extra 4870 512 and reinstalled drivers and everything took a shit.

Thanks again for all the help, Im still in a bad jam though.

I have only used an AGP X1950 card for the GPU1 client and two HD3850 cards in separate AGP systems for the current client. No multi-Ati card setups. That's the extent of my knowledge with Ati. My experience is thus limited. The only other suggestion I can offer is hardware related. Try running the new card by itself since we know that the X2 works fine. Also, you might want to swap slots. This will probably have no result but you never know. Motherboards can be finicky sometimes.

I was thinking about running the other card by itself and seeing what happend. I might try that out.

Anyone have any other ideas for my to try if that does not work tomorrow?

You could PM EvilAlchemist. I think he might have the most knowledge on running ATi cards here.

Before you yank cards out of the machine just try running one client or the other and see if you can get some of them running and not others. Did you make sure it didn't configure CrossfireX automatically with the new card?

Did you follow the guide from last year to decrease CPU usage while folding ATI? If not check it out. If so you might have to tweak it now that you have more GPUs.

That's what I was thinking. He's normally on at this time.

Another question I have is what if any settings did you add in the 'Environment Variables' in your System Properties?

That's what I was thinking. He's normally on at this time.
1) Which OS ?
2) Are you using the VGA Dummy Plugs? (If not, woudl explain some driver install issue in Vista / Win 7)
3) Check CrossFire Settings -> Set to Disable is not aready

You have an extra "-" before ati_r700 take that out.

Correct:
-forcegpu ati_r700

Your Argument lines should be:
-gpu 0 -forcegpu ati_r700 -verbosity 9
-gpu 1 -forcegpu ati_r700 -verbosity 9
-gpu 2 -forcegpu ati_r700 -verbosity 9

What are you Are you running any 'Environment Variables' settings?

Hey guys just an update, I tried correcting my flags like recommended and still nothing. What if I were to remove the added card, get the main 4870x2 folding then try installing the extra card. Would windows pickup the other 4870 without re installing the drivers?

Also the Asus Rampage Formula (my mobo) has a bios flash that fixes some detection problem with 4870x2 cards specifically so I'm going to flash it up to that tomorrow.

If all the software recommendations posted in this thread proved ineffective, I would start with the hardware troubleshooting like testing cards by themselves and/or swapping, etc.

That could very well be the problem. Like I posted earlier, motherboards can be finicky. Hopefully that will resolve your issues if all else fails. /crosses fingers

What drivers are you running?

Catalyst 10.2 was just released and is working much better for me than 10.1 was.

Also what mobo do you have?
I would not start changing environment variables until you can get it running properly.
Since you had issues just installing drivers, something tells me that there is more to this than just F@H acting finicky.

Was 10.2 released in the last 48 hours?

If so I dont have it, I downloaded the latest catalyst drivers as of Tuesday.

yes

Download the drivers
Unistall the old ones
Run driver sweeper
Install both cards
reboot
Install new drivers

Try again

*Update*

Got it working!

Updated the Asus Rampage Formula BIOS, it was 6 revisions behind and I flashed it just one year ago. Turns out that was part of the problem, the cards WERE detecting wrong - the seconday PCI slot would display and nothing on the primary slot, after the BIOS flash now the problem is corrected and the card in the primary PCI-Express slot detects correctly as the main card.

After that I re-installed the latedt ATI drivers and made sure all my flags were correct everything started working. GPU1, then tried GPU2 and finally GPU3.

Thanks everyone for all your help!
