Unlocking iPhones

gotta be fake... thats way to fast

and unlocking the iphone criples it since on other networks you woulndt be able to use the features that ATT has...
 
Just got the link from a friend, so I have no way of knowing if it's real. I haven't seen it reported in any other outlets, which does set off alarms.
 
was already on G4 tv that people are indeed unlocking iphones already. Give it a whirl
 
I would not doubt people have already unlocked the phone.
Things have become effect in unlocking certain things; though the true questions is what can not be used once you unlock it or take it to another network.

Also, since the sim card is under battery, how hard is it to change it?

The SIM is not under the battery, the slot to remove the SIM card is at the top of the phone.

yea thats what Im thinking too..
they'll probably give you an IMEI that will crash your iphone :rolleyes: lol and sell your email address to companies....

just a beware note to people who try it.... spam emails coming your way!!! :D lol

Like you can't just setup a gmail or hotmail account for this.

what features? EDGE? thats not exactly new...

but ya i would love to know if this works... cause i wouldnt mind having an iphone but im not giving up my t-mobile :D

i know edge isnt new... but some of the applications and stuff wouldnt work

i remember reading it somewhere? plus do any other networks have edge? so you still stuck with only ATT?

ya most other GSM providers also have EDGE... I have EDGE with T-Mobile on my Dash... and cheaper than AT&T overall after the my-favs family plans price of data etc...
 
Hopefully they will make it for other carriers too like t-mobile. I just think it would be a dumb move if they only carried it for att.

AT&T has an exclusive agreement for the iPhone for the next 5 years in the US.

well then gg apple, dont need to give you $600 for at least 5 years :p

i had AT&T long ago, and im going to keep it at that... by far the worst over-saturated network at least here in south florida... you have full coverage, but cant make/recieve calls half the time becuase the sites are full

also most sites are basically reporting the same thing...

AT&T will have exclusive US distribution for the next five years and the deal stops Apple from developing a new version of the phone for CDMA wireless networks such as Sprint and Verizon's. Basically if you want the iPhone, you will have to take your service to the GSM based AT&T (formerly Cingular).

ok there are several other GSM networks in the US... like T-Mobile and All Tel... sooo does that mean we can expect an iPhone from any of them?

AT&T's main competitors are Verizon and Sprint... both CDMA networks... (and iDen for nextel but that is thankfully going away) so thats why they want to stop a CDMA version... but i havent seen anything that forbids any other cellular carrier to use them...

also if you are outright paying for the iPhone why would apple lock it? that seems kind of in bad faith cause even T-Mobile and AT&T will give you the unlock code if you pay the full price for a phone or are out of your contract...

Not for at least 5 years, since AT&T is the exclusive carrier. My life would have been easier if what you said was the case, since I'm also a T-Mobile user. . .but unfortunately, iPhone = AT&T for the foreseeable future.

First. . .It's not a question of GSM vs. CDMA. In fact, Apple went to Verizon first and Verizon insisted on using vCast for media sales - which Apple obviously wouldn't accept on an Apple-branded phone. If the business details could have been worked out between Verizon and Apple, the iPhone would be CDMA. The details didn't work out, so today we have what we have.

Second, Apple would be inclined to lock the phone as a means to control the user experience - in the same way they don't turn over OSX to PC manufacturers for use on generic white-box PCs. Whether you agree with the reasons why, I think you have to admit that by controlling the hardware and software variables, it makes it easier to ensure a given user experience.

an activated sim card is going to work in any GSM phone that will take it..

and every "expierence" that i have had with AT&T/Cingular has only made me want to kill kittens

maybe in 5 years i will revisit the iphone...

let the AT&T users deal with the 1st gen bugs and crappy network...

im suprised that they didnt go to sprint... they have a (gasp) 3g EVDO network so it would have made the "expierence" less painful...

apparantly according to mr. jobs the reason the iphone dosent have 3g is becuase AT&T's 3g network isnt mature enough (lol?) so why bother including it?

IMEI for a phone is like a MAC address for a NIC. The don't give you a new IMEI, you usually just have to do some sequence of button presses and enter a code. Atleast, that's how it's been when I've unlocked my old phones.

I understand that a GSM SIM card should work in most anyt GSM-capable phone. I was only making a guess as to why Apple would not offer an unlocked phone.

I don't know why they didn't go to Sprint, but have some guesses. . .
They may have insisted on using their store as Verizon did. But a more likely explanation is that Sprint is only now getting their act together after their acquisition of Nextel. Merging the two companies proved more difficult than they expected and they had some real problems leveraging the strengths that each partner brought to the table. I'm not sure Sprint/Nextel had the corporate and financial strength to make an iPhone partnership really viable.
