Except it's not your "property", you paid for a license to use the software, not ownership of it.

It sounds like you're confusing people trying to have an honest discussion about piracy with pirates. Pointing out the fact that piracy is copyright infringement not theft doesn't make someone a pirate, it doesn't even mean that they're in favor of it.

Somehow I'm not surprised that someone brought this up even though it has nothing to do with the post it's in response to. Epox73 clearly meant that they had bought a licensed copy and own that licensed copy, not they own the IP or hold the copyright. :rolleyes:

As far as I'm concerned once I buy a legal copy of a game I can do whatever I want with that copy(play, mod, crack, use the disk as a coaster) as long as it doesn't infringe on the rights of the copyright holder(like redistributing). The DMCA might come into play with the cracking part but I highly doubt that a publisher would sue a paying customer for cracking a game they bought, there would be a lot of backlash and the courts might not decide in their favor.

The quote addressess your rights as a license holder, not ip. Read, then write. I hate pirates.... self justifying slime that drags down everyone, from customer to creator.
 
The only way you infringe these rights is if you make copies for friends and family or worse you sell copies for a profit.
Once you purchase you should be able to do what you want with it and companies really have zero way to enforce this upon you.

Have you ever let a friend or family borrow a music cd to listen to? you are now a criminal because you just took a potential sale out of their pocket, you are a thief.

If you are totally honest you would tell this person to piss off and go buy their own copy.

You see how this can be a gray area?

I have no problem buying a video game, putting in a code to install it but after that I do not want DRM on my system period.

That isn't what we were arguing, bud.You said any terms of sale are unacceptable. I am telling you if you agree to a sale contract, you are giving your word legally and aree liable if you break that. Like it or not that's the law of the land. If you don't like it, don't violate it, just don't buy it in the first place or steal it. Problem solved. Alternatively you can try to get the law changed.I doubt you'll find much support on that one, though.
 
There have been petitions going on for DRM free content, hell it's already happening in the music industry.

What you are saying is people really read the fine print when they buy a game, movie etc just like they are scared to take the label off of their mattress.

Are the police going to kick your door down if you do? nope.

That fine print is just lawyer speak to cover their own ass.

I am sure everybody on this forum has violated some copyright at one point either intentionally or not, does that mean we are all criminals?

All those days of swapping Atari cartridges and swapping games on floppies for the C64, I'd be in jail for life. Oops. :eek:

Seriously though, the majority suffer though DRM rules because of a few bad apples, those who pirate copies for profit which hurts the developer and distributor.

I've seen it mentioned GOG is the answer, well every game I searched for on their site not was listed so how can I buy it if they do not carry it?

Not a fan of signing up for this cloud gaming scenario either like steam and Uplay.

I bought just about every Ubisoft-Redstorm rainbow 6 games going back to the very first one. Even back then they had Safedisc which was a pain in the ass and the latest R6 has gone back to Safedisc from SecuROM and the worst, Starforce.

This is where alcohol 120% for mounting and no-cd patches came into play and it continues to this day.

It's a standard clause that basically says you have the right to use the product but they still hold the copyright, I fail to see how that negates anything I said.

You don't seem to understand it, if you even read it, then. It is explicitly stating that you have a right, upon purchase, to use the product under these terms that you are agreeing to by purchasing a license to the product. Those terms include anything and everything in the EULA.
