Two programs requiring 3d acceleration

Pretty simple question.... but I don't know the answer.

Would having two video cards (either SLI or non-SLI) allow me to run two processes at once that require 3d acceleration. Like World of Warcraft and XBox via TV Tuner maybe? Or two games of World of Warcraft at once? I've noticed when I trying playing two games at once, neither one at a decent speed. So is it possible to arrange it so I can do both at once?

Nope.

Not on current platforms but supposedly windows vista will support this.

I'll agree with what ^^ said, but as far as 2 instances of WoW and such... You can (depending on the game) run it with just one videocard.. Now, if your meaning 2 monitors or whatever, with one instance on one and one on the other, then no. I tried it with DAoC.... I didnt have much luck. But I had no problem running 2 copies of DAoC on one monitor with my 9600XT, the 9800Pro made the performance barable, and the extra 512mb ram (1.5gb in total) helped with the task switching speed nicely. Pair a decent videocard and some ram up with a dual core cpu and Im sure it'll be even better (I know nothing about dual core.. So /shrug, its an assumption, and sounds correct). Whether or not you can do the Xbox thing via tv tuner, I never tried because I was disappointed with how my xbox looked on my monitor (I probably didnt spend enough time tweaking, or something) so I said screw it and sold the tuner to a buddy.

And after rereading your question, I totally missed the two video card thing... /shrug whoops

Thanks guys. Yeah, the issue at hand is running two games on two seperate monitors. Right now my 2nd monitor only gets to see action from the Internet, iTunes, and AIM... seems kinda like a boring job for a monitor. But this summer I'll probably go to a dual boxing setup so I guess it probably won't be a huge problem. Just gonna have to be switching keyboard/mice more often (I don't want to use a KVM switch because I'll want to be able to see/use both at at the same time).

Guess I'm looking at a three monitor and two computer setup in the future :p

I actually think it should help. If you run WoW in windowed mode, and already can have both windows open at the same time, one on either display, then why wouldn't it help. It would just have 2 graphics cards drawing each window.

I think the problem maybe that Crossfire and SLI may not support working in dual card mode while the desktop is extended. This I am not sure about. I would recommend a dual core PC as well, setting one game to one core and the other to another core.

While it has been some time since I tried this (I was running Catalyst 4.11 and a 9600XT), framerates totally tanked whenever I moved a 3D accelerated application to the secondary monitor.

ATI cards have always had SERIOUS performance problems when displaying 3d on 'secondary' monitors. It works great on nVidia cards.
