If you are still on the fence about which next-gen console to purchase and waiting for a sign from above to move you off your dead spot, developers’ insight into the speed of both may just do the trick.

Even this close to launch, “the hardware isn’t locked,” said another source. Sony and Microsoft are each still working on the graphics drivers for each console.

So basically, does not matter that the PS4 has superior capabilities. Unless it's a super easy tweak to make the PS4 version look better ( if the game is both PS4 and Xbone ) then the PS4 version will be neutered to look just as bad as the Xbone version out of simplicity. That's what I got from the article.

So Xbone is holding back the PS4's potential, and thus holding back the potential on PCs as well since there are many console ports of games. Lovely.

Nothing new here

Games designed/imited to Gamecube specs got ported to PS2
Games designed/imited to Xbox 360 specs get ported to PS3

Dev's are a lazy bunch. PC gamers have known this for a looooong time!!

though its been already giving that the PS4 has more juice than the xbox one, I'm still finding it hard to believe a 1920x1080@30fps PS4 is comparable to an xbox one at 1600x900, isn't that just too much?

I'd like to believe the author, but he just keep saying "his contacts", who the heck are these contacts?

with what he is saying though he seems to be implying that developers are lazy, especially now that all consoles and pc are sharing the same architecture, this is also the time that developers don't seem to care to optimize a game to a given system more, call me skeptical

Couldn't help but feel the same way. I was also a little surprised/skeptical when the author claimed that not only were Microsoft's drivers "horrible" but that they were also worse than the PS4's. I really struggle to see how that could be the case when Microsoft has over a decade of experience writing the most widely used gaming API in the world. How could they mess up drivers so badly as to be labeled "horrible" on what is essentially an AMD/ATi powered PC?

who cares. You pic a console based on exclusives, brand loyalty, the controller....
One the plus side the PS4 will have smoother gameplay.

Your right it is very odd considering that the Xbone uses the same drivers as Windows 8 does.

So this guy is saying that the PS4 drivers are better then the AMD Catalyst drivers for Windows.

Well you could just tell that's full of it when a developer is making such claims on resolution and fps changing both resolution and fps as the benchmark. I also can't tell why they claim the ALU is faster you mean the GPU? As the CPU is the same but you talk about the CPU getting a clock boost as a difference?

All I know is the exclusives are going to be AMAZING on the PS4.

I think the big difference will be resolution. The PS3 has a crappy GPU so to meet their framerate targets developers often have the PS3 version render at a lower resolution than the Xbox 360.

This time around the Xbox One has a crappy GPU so it will be the one where games are rendered at a lower resolution.

You don't really notice that much when you play the games, but in a side by side comparison the difference is very apparent.

Of course, if you want resolution you buy the PC version :)

" On the graphics side it’s once again obvious that Microsoft and Sony are shopping at the same store as the Xbox One’s SoC integrates an AMD GCN based GPU. Here’s where things start to get a bit controversial. Sony opted for an 18 Compute Unit GCN configuration, totaling 1152 shader processors/cores/ALUs. Microsoft went for a far smaller configuration: 768 (12 CUs).

Microsoft can’t make up the difference in clock speed alone (AMD’s GCN seems to top out around 1GHz on 28nm), and based on current leaks it looks like both MS and Sony are running their GPUs at the same 800MHz clock. The result is a 33% reduction in compute power, from 1.84 TFLOPs in the PS4 to 1.23 TFLOPs in the Xbox One."

From what I have heard from devs about 20% of the GPU is dedicated to GPGPU tasks such as physics.

Yup. Developers rarely go out of their way to make a port superior on a different system. They go the easy route. The ROI isn't there for them to spend a lot more time and money on higher resolution textures, better animation, etc.. It's been that way for a long time, especially with PC's. We get a lot of console ports with shitty textures and animations. We may have superior hardware, but getting devs to take the time to take advantage of it is futile.

Your right it is very odd considering that the Xbone uses the same drivers as Windows 8 does.

Hardly. Everything on the XBONE Is a highly customized version, including DirectX. If you think MS just ran dxsetup.exe on the XBONE and called it a day you're delusional.

Its not about ROI. Its more about political considerations for not making one platform obviously superior to another's for a multiplatform title. Multiplat devs want to keep the best possible relationship with every platform's manufacturer.

By the same token that's also why you won't really see any Kinect integration on multiplat titles. The devs in the article linked in the OP even point this out that "the console companies really want us to use their special features" but they won't.

If ps4 graphics are better than xbox, why does titan fall look so much better than killzone

Is this where first party games come in?

i'm pretty sure developers (who are not named peter molyneux) would go the extra mile to release games that look as good as possible on any platform, but pencil pushers and execs in some board room make the decision who live in a world of powerpoint slides by some consultants and ramble of "content" and "experience".

Ok, yea, you got me. It's the accountants that won't justify the extra cost. Most developers are pretty damn cool with trying to make the best they can.

I am still torn between systems. The exclusives really aren't too much right now, but I know Naughty Dog will come out with some bad ass games, as usual, for the PS4. Xbox has some good stuff, too.... I'm leaning to the PS4, though.

Is it really that must more "extra" work to include a larger texture files, though (just taking on the resolution argument) or enable an extra bit of AA for more powerful systems? Those options likely are going to be included anyways for PC release, so I don't think it's terribly unreasonable amounts of "extra" work.

Not sure... Sure seems like it, though, with some releases. Many console to PC ports have the same low res textures as the consoles.

wonder who will be the console king this time. xb1 might have a more difficult time selling this time especially with the higher price

Xbox one DX is just DX11.2 with a few extra functions that could be put in due to it being only on one platform... Yes a custom Dx but it's not the same as the embedded Dx they used for the 360, it's practically the same Dx as used in 8.1 minus a few xbox one only functions.

Or it could have something to do with them still working on the eDRAM caching in the drivers? DDR3 isn't nearly as fast as GDDR5 for GPU use.

As consoles are never anything more than a race to the lowest common denominator bottom, I wouldn't be too concerned about any alleged next-gen console performance differences.

However, the differences are unlikely to result in any tangible differences across the machine’s third-party launch titles, with the need to develop for both machines to a tight deadline meaning that many studios will simply “castrate” the PS4 version to bring both in line.

I will bite the bait:

It simply doesn't, plus you have not seen Titanfall on the Xbone, you have only seen it on high end computers with Titans.

By the way, i now ask you back, if the one is so powerful, why a simple fighter could only go up to 720p 60?

“The poor [graphics] drivers have made it difficult to push either of them, and the developers aren’t familiar with the hardware yet,“ said one source.

shouldn't drivers already be made by AMD?

shouldn't drivers already be made by AMD?

Not properly, remember that this is not your standard GPU, sure it has the parts, but it also has extras, mainly in the form of that eDRAM and the much smaller basic bandwidth.

So, yeah, if you don't fine tune your drivers to what your non standard hardware is, and also don't provide proper support on the development tools to make the use of those non standard parts as seamless as possible then you are gonna have a bad time.

Maybe not as bad this time. These PS4s and bones are essentially made from PC parts. Maybe it wont be so (obviously)bad this generation.

I hope Xbox1 will get developers to use DX11 codepath more for their shitty pc ports don't need that shit overhead of the ancient dx9

Don't worry too much about this, MS only has enough weight to pull this crap at launch, after launch they won't have enough power to strongarm this kind of parity as no AAA 3rd party developer will want to let their games to look dated vs exclusives & first parties, so there is that hope...

this article is such complete unverified garbage. i can debunk 3/4's of it just based off my hardware architecture design experience alone
