I just upgraded from a TBird 1400, and I got an Athlon 64 2400+.

When I go into Windows System, it recongnizes it as an Unknown CPU Type running 1.5 ghz.

How can I fix this? Thank-you
 
Perfectly normal when using a new socket A cpu in an old socket A mobo. If everything is working fine i wouldn't sweat it one bit. (my cpu/mobo combo does the same thing)
 
Yeah, sorry, forgot the XP part. (I'm more of a cosmetic modder than a hardware modder ;) ) lol.

My mb: Shuttle AK31V20

I don't mind if its not detecting the name, but isn't my chip supposed to clock at a 2.0 ghz and not just 1.5 ghz?

Older socket A mobos may not be able to handle the high default multi of the 2400+. Sounds like you're running at 11 x 133 or whatever your mobo may default to. Checking your manual and slowly manipulating your multiplier/fsb would be your next move.

Super hardware n00b here, would anyone be so kind as to help me do this?
 
Easiest thing to do is pick up THIS MoBo and all your probs will be solved. Unless your still using PC 133 then your gonna have to enter BIOS (by hitting ESC while your computers booting) then go through each option till you see a multiplyer optiong (it'll look like this= x00 -the Zero's mean what ever #'s you current multiplyer is) then making sure your FSB (Front Side Bus) is correct (it should be 133mhz) escape. Save. and your done:D
 
Your motherboard is an early KT266A board that has some overclocking options in the BIOS.
According to the compatibility list found here, the maximum chip supported with the (apparently) newest BIOS on your board is the AXP2100+. The motherboard appears to support a multiplier of up to 14, however, so you should be able to run your chip at about 1.86GHz.

Go into BIOS and change the multiplier to 14 (or higher if it lets you) and make sure the front side bus speed is 133MHz. If you've lost the manual, you can download the AK31V3 manual from Shuttle's support page.

Otherwise, consider buying a newer board that truly supports your chip like the one Juan linked to (though I would buy the new version of that motherboard myself, the $25 is worth it in peace of mind).
 
I bought a ton of those refurbed boards and they all worked out fine. And they all came with everything.(well, cept this one time when It didnt come with an IO plate but a quick email to Shuttle and they sent me one) I rec. a refurb because if this guy is trying to stretch his old board I didn't think he'd have the $$ to get a new one. Personaly whenever I buy a new Proccesor I get a new MoBo and chuck the old stuff. Cept when I had an Abit KT7 and upgraded from a Duron 800@1 Ghz to an Athlon 1.3 that wouldn't OC for crap :(
 
I agree in principle, I just think that a refurbed motherboard is a more risky investment, and a board that costs about $60 new isn't all that much more moolah.
 
Norce2 mobo's have definitely spoiled us pricewise, it made more sense to upgrade a mobo instead of the cpu. Too bad they've officially entered "budget status" and are no longer top of the line. That being said, you can find a deal with a refurb or epox 8rda+ oem , be sure to select "Upgrade from OEM to Retail Box" for $3.90 more. Its a 200fsb mobo with the mcp-t southbridge and the goodness it brings.
 
Thanks for all the replies everyone. Has anyone used the A7N8X? I'm wondering if anyone has any good/bad word on it. That is the one I am thinking of getting, as its $120 at my local computer store. (I am not ordering anything online).

Ok, I am thinking of trying this thing where I increase my FSB in bios to 14 as someone mentioned.

I've never done anything like this, will I need to add any more fans or anything? Also, will this cause any instability issues?

I will only be doing this until 2 fridays from now when I get paid again.

2400+ == 133MHz x 15 == 2.0GHz
133MHz x 14 in your BIOS == 1.87GHz

Your CPU is still underclocked. You could probably get away with a lower voltage, and thus less cooling. I wouldn't, as more cooling is always better, but in theory you could.
 
Ok, I got it up to a 2.0 ghz, but then my BFV started crashing, so I lowered it to 1.83, and it runs great now. Thanks for all your help everyone.
 
That Asus isgreat, a buddy of mine uses it and it realy is a great preformance. But to be honest the Shuttle Performs identically and is less then half the price. That is unless you want SoundStorm. If thats the case then go for the Abit NF7-S which is a bit better then the Asus board for OCing. BTW the Shuttle AN35N and NF7-S offer about the same amount of OCability, I sprung for the NF7-S personaly because of the soundstorm. Also when I picked up the NF7-S the AN35N was $40 less then the NF7-S. And to get a comperable sound card (an Audigy2) it would of retailed me $90 so I sprung for the NF7. New or Refurbed I recomend the AN35N over the NF7-S and A7N8X mainly cuz you get the same perfomace at less or about half the price. Think of it as getting a Videocard. The only Diff. between getting a Sapphire 9800 Pro and a BBA 9800 Pro is the name and about $30.
