ok, according to my mobo's manual, i can have 1 SS/DS DIMM on slot 1, or a DS/SS on slot 1 and a DS/SS on slot two, or I can have 3 SS, one on each slot. Is DS/SS referring to single/dual-channel? if so, does this mean I can't add just one more stick of ram to my comp? (my processor doesn't support dual-DDR, or so I've been told)
 
...yeah? what are single-sided and double-sided memory? I have no idea what they're talking abuot...
 
Single Sided (SS) is where the little black chips (sheesh, i'm a comp. engineer and forgot what they're called :( ) are on only one side of the stick of ram

Double sided is where the chips are on both sides of the stick of ram

I believe that's what it means. Then again, I haven't touched ram in the past 3 years or so.
 
I don't get it...What I need to know is if I can run 2 512 sticks of DDR400 on my board when it gives those specs
 
yes... you can run two single sided sticks or two double sided sticks... if you think you will get a third stick of ram go with two single sided as it seems that your computer will only accept 3 single sided, not 3 double sided

Yes you can.

As long as you don't place in 3 double-sided sticks of ram, your mobo can run it/them
 
I should also ask how do I check to see if ram is SS or DS BEFORE I BUY IT (like if I get it from newegg)
 
btw, it says if I have a two-slot config, and I have an SS/DS on slot 1, then the chip on slot 2 or 3 has to be the OTHER kind, so if its an SS on slot 1, it has to be a DS on slot 2 or 3, this is why I have to know, because I can't order another stick until I understand this issue...
 
To cut it short, here are your possibilities

1 SS Dimm in slot 1, or
1 DS Dimm in slot 1, or
2 SS Dimms in slots 1 & 2, or
2 DS Dimms in slots 1 & 2, or
3 SS Dimms in slots 1, 2 & 3

I dont think that sounds right... I think the explination that I gave you and that Decelerate has given you is more correct... It wouldnt make much sense for your board to force you to use different types :confused:
 
well I'm just tellin ya what it says...but I'm gonna go ahead and order some RAM anyway, I can't afford to wait forever
