I have had a recurring problem on my computer. At bootup, sometimes I will get a message just before the first XP startup screen (the cursor bar at the bottom that fills to white) that states that the c:\windows\system32\config\system file is corrupted. At that point, I have to boot from my XP cd and copy the system file from c:\windows\repair over the corrupted file, which lets me boot and then I get to reinstall all my hardware drivers :mad:

I was hoping someone might be able to shed some light on what might be causing this? I've tried two different power supplies and three different hard drives to no avail, I still get this about every other week.

My system is a biostar M7VKD motherboard, running an AMD duron 750 cooled by a gigabyte 3d cooler, 512 megabytes of industry standard PC133 memory, a 20 gig maxtor and a 60 gig maxtor hard drives, a BTC 16x12x32 cd-rw, sapphire 9800 pro. I am running XP pro, it is not on service pack 1 (every time I have to copy the system file over it gets rid of service pack so I don't bother anymore)

I have tried running both with the via 4 in 1 drivers and without.

I really appreciate any help!
 
are you overclocking it at all. If so try running it at its rated speed.

Have you tried swapping out the RAM or tried something as simple as replacing the IDE cable.
 
Nope, everything is running at stock speeds. I have tried swapping out IDE cables, sorry. Just regular thin wire ribbons is what I'm using, I forget the proper name.

Oh yeah, the RAM. I suppose I have not tried that, anyone got any PC133 lying around I can test with? :D
 
I guess I should ask this: what exactly does that error mean? Can anyone help me with that? I have one friend who thinks it has to do with my motherboard and another who thinks it has to do with the hard drive itself. Since the controllers are on the motherboard though...

...I don't know anymore. All I know is I've been having this problem on and off since I put the system together back in 01, and I'm getting tired of it. And mortgage payments come before complete system upgrades. Besides, I'm waiting for PCI express to become more mainstream before I build a whole new system.

I'll see if I can't find a memory stick to try out for awhile (256 should be enough for xp at a minimum, shouldn't it?). If I can find someway to make it stable, I'd love to use it for an HTPC.
 
It means what it says, the file is currupt (or missing). If replacing the file fixes the error, you KNOW it was a corrupt/missing file.

The questions is... What caused the corruption? That isn't always easy to answer, and for that, there is a LARGE thread by Ice Czar to read.
