Hey, i just built a new computer and im looking for a video card now. I have a VGA monitor for the time being, but i plan on upgrading soon. I also want to be able to hook it up to my high def tv an watch movie in high def on the tv at times. What would be a good card that would allow me to hook up to my tv and yet have a vga port for my monitor. I want a decent mid range card. Thanks in advance.
 
It all depends on your budget. If you want to spend around $160ish go with a 9600gt or a (3850 if you want ati) if you can spend around $220 or so I would say go with 8800gt, and if you really don't have a budget and have to buy now get the new 8800gts 512mb. But if you can nvidia is releasing there new high end 9800gtx and 9800gx2 in march. So it all depends we need more information.
 
ok, heres some more info to get a better response. I use my computer mainly just for watching movies, listenign to music, and browsing the net among other things. I dont usually do too much gaming. Right now my monitor is VGA and i dont know how long i will have that one but i can use a converter until i upgrade to a new one that supports dvi. I want to be able to hook up to my hdtv to watch movies on in high def. i just found out about something called "High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection". How will this affect me? In the future if i buy a blu-ray drive for my computer, will i have to have a video card that supports this new protection to watch the movies on my tv?
 
9600 GT or HD 3870 would be the best choices now, as they're so close in price and power.

Any graphics card and monitor/TV must be HDCP compliant in order to allow unlocking of HDCP protected material for playback.
If any of the above isnt compliant you wont be able to play the content at full quality.
So get an HDCP compliant gfx card and make sure your TV is compliant too.
 
I am wary about the 8800GT, the stock cooler is insufficient, my card artifacts, so im going to have to get a aftermarket cooler, probably the EVGA Akimbo.
 
just wondering, don't you need a hd-dvd or a blu-ray player to be able to watch high def materials?

If you want to play a HD-DVD disk or Blu Ray disk then yes you need a player to play them with (that is HDCP compliant).
I havent tried online distribution of High Definition media yet but if they can still include the protection, it will still need HDCP compliant hardware for the rest of the video processing chain.

I very much doubt that legal downloads of such material will be allowed without the protection as that directly bypasses all the effort they have made to protect the material so far.
