What I've done:

1) Reinstalled Steam
2) Reinstalled several versions of my graphics driver
3) Fixed the WMI issue (I'm sure)

System:

Q6600
8800 GTS
4 gigs of ram
520HX
74gb raptor
Vista Ultimate 32bit

Steam Crash Troubleshooting

I'd concentrate on section 3, fiddling the cmd line options.
start with:
-nosound -window -dxlevel 70 +mat_forcehardwaresync 0
but from helping someone else, -dxlevel had to be 80 or 81 for tf2/portal to work. (his card didnt seem to support dx9 right which is -dxlevel 90)

or you could also try the option -autoconfig on the options line, which is supposed to re-autoconfigure the settings for ones that work.

They also mention some playing with the dx hardware accel settings, which might help.

make sure you have the very latest direct x installed and if you did reinstall different video drivers make sure you uninstalled the old ones first.

I just installed Steam and now my IE hangs. Its a rubbish bit that Steam.

Uninstall AIM. Seriously.

Same issue for Trine, Mount and Blade. Nothing has worked so far. Stupid issue. Running 64 Vista Pro.

I have no idea if this work or if this method is 'clean'. I just did a quick google search.

Thanks. I will try it when I have some patience. Really should be addressed by Valve. This is becoming a common error.
