Start a Inspiron from scratch.

If I have an Inspiron 9300 can I format the HDD and install a fresh version of Windows XP Professional? It would not be the version of Windows that came with the computer.

I want to TOTALLY get rid of all the Dell preloaded crap software.

Off the top of my head I would need drivers for the media buttons on the front of the laptop and maybe drivers for the built in mousepad.

Support for that is built into WinXP.

But of course your WinXP Pro is probably "Corp" so don't forget to slipstream in SP2 for a minimum amount of fuss. http://www.nliteos.com/

It's built into WinXP, just like support for the extra keyboard buttons on many keyboards (house [home page], envelope , <-, ->, magnifying glass [search], refresh, screenshot, volume, etc). No driver is necessary.

yup I never reinstalled that stuff and the buttons worked just fine

I couldn't gat nliteos to work on my desktop. Error message during installation asking to select a folder w/ i386 and amd64 folders. I don't remember the exact wording, but I selected every folder on my PC with those files/subfolders and none allowed it to complete installation.
