So I just got stalker...not to mention the fact that it runs like crap and a half on my system (from what ive read the current version of the game doesnt fully support 8800 gpus in sli...they are working on a patch) but the game looks like something released in 2003 or 2004...more like farcry than something nextgen...fear and half life 2 look WAAAY better. I regret this purchase

there is more to games than just visuals.

haven't played it, now if the game plays bad and is not fun then thats another issue.

Re-check the prescription for your glasses and look at the game again. From the beautiful fires to great textures, lots of detail and many polygons. Dynamic lights, dynamic shadows, this is so far the best looking game I have played.

my glasses are fine thank you...im sorry but even with the texture detail at max the textures look like something off an xbox game...they are simply bad. The lighting may be awesome but the character and weapons graphics suck.

What are you trying to compare it to? The weapons look 1000x better than half life 2, and the game play is better. htere is hardly anything to shoot in hl2. Stalker there is never a dull moment.

maybe someone has been looking at too many crysis screens... stalker is a good looking game, HL2 isnt any better.. i think they are pretty even IMO. the xray engine is old too, i think its older then the source engine..

the atmosphere of stalker is what makes the game with the added great visuals and great view distance.

I'm running my desktop in sig, which is several times weaker than you SLI 8800s, and it runs great at 1680*1050, 2xAAA, 8xHQAF, high detail no HDR. Looks unbelievable. And this is on Vista with all its "performance issues" nonetheless. You must have something incorrect in your system.

I'd say you are in for a lot of disappointment if you're buying games for graphics. It's like buying a book because it has a pretty cover.

Running it @ 1920 x 1200 on 8800GTS Sli. Looks pretty darn good to me, and I'm also playing HL264, HL2E1, FC64, Oblivion. Did you install the latest patch for the game?

I tried Stalker, but I just can't get into it. The translations are off-ish, and that just irritates me.

Actually on my rig Stalker runs a fair amount faster in Vista, 8800GTX. I get some minor chop in XP, absolutely none in Vista, openeing view of town is 5-10 fps faster.

im only running about 20fps with my 8800gts sli at 1680x1050. Im also playing oblivion (I actually bought shimmering isles the same time I bought stalker) Im running it at the same res with 8xq AA and 16xAF at like 60-70fps so i know my hardware is running ok. Im gonna download the patch for stalker now and see if that helps the frames...

It helps to know Russian when hearing all the soldiers talk :p (none of them speak native Ukranian. Odd, considering that Chernobyl is in Ukraine).

well the last 10 or so games ive purchased have not disapointed me as far as graphics go so I just dont understand the low quality graphics of this game it just doesnt make any sense. Also if i was the only one who cared signifcantly about graphics why is there a multi million dollar performance pc component industry...

well I tweaked some things to make the sky look ALOT better and realistic (post screens later) even without that, it looks fantastic, sure fps isn't too great but atleast the fps is constant which is what matters, also keep in mind the amount of stuff on screen

this is the best looking game overall so far, and the potential for mods and skins when SDK comes out has no limits, this in my opinion owns Oblivion...never did like the overrly done HDR anyway, who looks at a rock and the sun causes it to be blindingly bright...realistic? no don't think so, STALKER realistic? yes (accept for the damage)

Because there is a demand for them and people buy them... I was just stating my opinion, take it or leave it.

For a game that took like 5 - 6 years to make its not that impressive graphic wise or let alone game play wise lol.

I think the game looks pretty good personally. Nothing really out on pc that is head and shoulders above it.

just beat it , I dont think it looked at all dated, very good looking game, love the grittiness of it. had that old broken down aged look to it.

good game.

well oblivion has been out long enough to have two expansions and it impresses me every time I play it...so there goes your theory

1 expanion..the other is just a silly content thing they slapped together.. most of that stuff can probaly be downloaded legally from mod websites

well kinda...but nights of the nine does add a small side story that you cant get through the individual content downloads

Well it seems that atleast with Stalker the developers are determined to release patches something that did not happen with Oblivion. You only have to look Oblivions unofficial patch readme and see how many issues vanilla Oblivion has. Iam Personally a diehard fan of Elder Scrolls but if this is the path the devs are taking, it will be the last Elder Scroll game I buy. I just can stand the mentality of big companies like EA and so on, lets release a half assed buggy and unoptimized game and let the community take it from there with mods. And the worst part is that there is legion of people always defending these abusive actions taken by big companies :(

I have not personally tried Stalker yet, but I agree with some posters in this thread. The very reason 90% of the games are so shallow in gameplay is due to people wanting more and more eye candy. Yes there is more to games than pretty graphics!

The game looks beautiful on my 7950, of course the outdoors are drab and dreary but it's supposed to be like that. Inside, underground there are some of the best textures I've ever seen (maybe that's because I just upgraded from a 6600 not too long ago), and the game is awesomely fun.

On the contrary, check out some of the screen shots from back in 2002, I played the alpha leak and it looked like CS 1.6, I think that they did alot with that engine and it's very impressive looking despite a few bugs.

i think part of the problem with those that think the gfx are mediocre is that they are looking for the wrong things.

the game world has a broken down, dirty look to it - as one should expect from any kind of a post apocalyptic world. it's not supposed to look like oblivion.

the actual quality of the textures, the details of the gameworld, the lighting, shadows, etc. are all very well done when gfx quality is at max settings, and they do a wonderful job of "selling" the atmosphere the game is trying to project.

the performance otoh could be improved one would think.... it's hard to believe lighting would drop my framerates 150fps :(

No the visuals fit the game. That's the problem with pc games these days everyone is so frigging hooked on if it looks pretty they overlook the actual game. Stalker is a great game gamers need to game and quit getting so hooked on how the game looks as so should developers. Give me a game that holds my interest rather than just a 3d piece of art.

The OP. Stalker has the best DX9 implementation to date, far superior to Farcry and HL2, if you can't see that then there's obviously something wrong with your system. The dynamic lighting is THE BEST I've ever seen in a game, better than Oblivion, better than *.FPS.

Even though this game will run on hardware released in 2003/2004 it won't look good at all, I've tried it on a P4 with Radeon 9800pro and while it's playable the GFX do look dated. On my current system, E6400 / 8800GTX the textures are crisp and very detailed and the amount of attention to detail is exceptionally high, think a normal HL2 level, now think 100x bigger and 100x more detailed.

Sure the grass sprites are not really detailed at all but the code that makes it sway in the wind sure makes it more believable.

i don't know about stalker but the Crysis trailer looks like it's going to take graphics up a notch or two ;)

Well back when oblivion came out everyone said that was the hottest shit out there, and I didn't understand why, (could of been my 6800GT, but I had HDR enabled), I preferred the graphics of F.E.A.R. and HL2 and Farcry. Stalker is out, and I think it looks great, But I don't think its the best looking graphics engine to date, fear (xp) to me still holds that title (out of the games I have played. Facial models in stalker aren't the best, but alot of other things are good about it, such a the sky, the dynamic lighting (which I disable since its not 100% playable for me yet with AA).

If this game came out a year or 2 years ago then the world would of been blown away, and I was under the impression that this title would be a DX10 implementation, but I am in no way disappointed with this title.

Its all in the eye of the beholder.
