Alright, so i went to hook up one of my extra rigs that i have laying around, and when plugged the power cord in, spark shot out. So i am guessing that my psu is dead now, since it wouldnt turn back on, i havent tried in the last few days, but i figured, if it would then, that its not gonna.

Is this a pretty fair guess, as to what the problem would be?

Are all psu's interchangable, like could i take one from another computer and put it into this rig if they were the same whattage?

any other suggestions/comments?
 
Make sure that the PSU hasn't friend anything else. Open up your case and check for burnt areas on your mobo or video card, use your nose and smell around. You can replace your PSU, but I would suggest getting a good one like those listed in the sticky on the top of the powers supplies forum, so that this doesn't happen again.
 
Prob a generic PSU.. I learned that generic PSU suck, the hard way...

Haha, so did I. Who doesnt love the smell of burnt metal and plastic :p
 
lol. so you let out the "magic smoke?" yeah.. it's the ps. but make sure you don't have a proprietary one like in some compaq's, hp's, or even dells... if it's a generic box u should be good to go.
 
ROTF I remember fioring up a DEERE psu in the shop in 2001 and it let out a huge fumaroil of white smoke and sparks and shut off

and then I had the courage to start it up again a few minutes later... or maybe I wanted to see more lightshow, it was a customer system of ours but all under warranty, but it all fired up and worked great!!! :eek::eek::eek::eek:

it is an HP computer.. so most likely ill have to order one from hp then?
 
most likely u will.. I would pull it out and see if it has a standard atx connector.. as well as seeing if it doesn't have any extra proprietary connectors on it. I remember the dell's at the office had a couple single wide rows of connections as well as the main connector.. which made it impossible to use a standard ps supply. Is it still under warrantee? I know dell is good with drop shipping u a new part and sending u a box for the bad part. It's probably gonna be kinda expensive through hp... do you have a model # of the pc or the ps?
 
I have had that computer for years now, about 4 or 5. so i know its not under warrenty anymore..model # XE785

is that what it says on the front? I never even heard of that model.. I searched on google and hp and can't find it.. I see some compaq deskpro's xe's but that's about it. Is there a series name? like deskpro or pavilion?
