Sonic Drive-In Possibly Breached

It appears that Sonic Drive-In may be another victim to a data breach. This follows the credit card breach fast food company Wendy's experienced earlier last year. The drive-in fast food chain has nearly 3,600 locations. Be sure to check on your credit card accounts for any unusual transactions.

"Our credit card processor informed us last week of unusual activity regarding credit cards used at SONIC," reads a statement the company issued to KrebsOnSecurity. "The security of our guests' information is very important to SONIC. We are working to understand the nature and scope of this issue, as we know how important this is to our guests. We immediately engaged third-party forensic experts and law enforcement when we heard from our processor. While law enforcement limits the information we can share, we will communicate additional information as we are able."
 
Time to go fucking cash only again. No one seems to care this is happening...just provide credit monitoring and people will be ok with it and move on. Why aren't we suing these companies? Why isn't our government going after them? Why isn't there a HUGE outcry from the populous?

Just doesn't make sense to me. Should have gone into the identity theft business; make millions and no one cares.

You can only sue if you have some kind of damages. Working to protect your identity, etc isn't worth suing over.

Srs tho for most companies security is a line item that doesn't generate revenue, so why should they invest in it? Even companies with a robust cybersecurity program get breached if the attacker is persistent enough, and if your fines/fees end up costing less than the cost of maintaining a program it's strictly a business move to skip it.

How many times have you bought something and skipped the extra protection plan because you figured the base plan was "good enough" or it would be cheaper to replace it later anyway?
 
Goddamn it. I haven't been to Sonic in months until a couple days ago. I have all the luck with this shit. A couple years back, I went to a Target for some stuff because it was on the way home. I don't normally do the shopping but I believe my girlfriend was out of town at the time. BAM. Data breach occurred later that week. At that time, I hadn't been to a Target in years.

Quite often, actually. Thing is, I'm not messing with other peoples lives. I've had the misfortune to have gone through real fraud and identity theft. Still paying for it a decade later. I've also worked for a fortune 500 company in IT and saw first hand and example of exactly what you explain. They literally let their clients data go overseas, unencrypted, and employees on that side were known and caught sharing management logins and had access to a lot they shouldn't. When I blew the whistle, I got curbstompted and found myself unemployed.

Maybe not every company is so shitting in their IT security, but if it was even a small example, it's scary. It's also unacceptable. It certainly may be cheaper for the company, but it costs us consumers billions and I don't see it getting any better anytime soon.

I had the same thing happen with Target. Never went in there for years finally did a few days later that happen. That said, the cards for Sonic according to the article went up for sell on the 18th so it you were just there a few days ago you might be ok. maybe...

Hmmmmm maybe you should let us know when you go out and shopping so we can avoid those places...
 
Damn, I'm screwed yet again. First it was Home Depot and Target, and now it's Equifax and Sonic for me.

I think I need to utilize cash more...
