Some more cryengine 3.

You guys underestimate the power of global illumination, and the impact it can have on realism.

This. Some gamers always like to pick holes in screenshots from siggraph papers, and end up missing the point (and importance) of what's being demonstrated.

Hopefully Cryengine 3 will attract more developers because CE2 was an utter failure in that regard. Crysis/Warhead are decent games but that's not a good ROI and definitely not good for me as a gamer. Seems like CE2 would have made for a decent RPG engine.

Sounds great to me. Being a PC gamer that is just one less piece of trash I have to sift through on the shelf.

Consoles: Curing the PC infection one game at a time. :D

Yup... consoles are sure removing the trash from PC gaming. So much variety. Such an explosion of new, original games filling the coffers of talented devs. Totally no derivative cash cow drivel.

Definitely no lack of breakaway hits to cause consumers to go back and buy games from nearly a decade ago (SC:Battle Chest was released Dec 31, 1999).

eventually blizzard and maxis will be the only pc developers.

thats pretty ignorant now.......
there still a lot of developers out there, even indie ones that havent fallen into the corporate hole and most likely never will.

I've been gaming on PC for 15+ years and I have no complaints about the quality nor the availability of enjoyable titles. But I'm no longer a fan of $50 games, I never buy a game more than $30. Even if I have to wait for it.

And when those same people have finally got a new video card, they are now complaining that there is nothing better looking than Crysis out.

Precisely.

The majority of PC Gamers deserve what's happening. Companies that re-use their old engines over and over and create simplistic games, which basically cater for the lowest common denominator: consoles. And these are the companies that get most of the praise, so why would other companies, that always tried to make things better, do anything different ? To hear the constant moaning of these ungrateful PC Gamers ? Not really and I would do the same honestly.

Uh, well top 10 games by sales figures are always going to be the casual games like Sims, Spore and WoW. The casual market is just larger than anything else so people who make games more for money/sales more than to actually make a great game (like for example EA/Will Wright), those people will always trump the newer innovative niche games.

There was many games released for the PC platform over them months and you're picking a tiny subset of them, no matter how many unique or niche games exist, the casual market will always dominte, this is why console sales exceed PC ones by so much.

Reason why that happens is because of poor game play design. Not our fault a game is flashy and souped up but yet doesn't last more than a week or two. I think at this point we are being held back significantly by consoles. The best way to create a game is ask the community what type of things they want in the game. Thats the problem here. Some of the these companies are turning stale because they just add whatever they think is good and it comes out like crap. That happens also with crappy developers. A lot of companies have a chance to improve on what they had but they choose to create something from scratch and fail. Look at what happened with call of duty. They improved on the same engine and it became a success. I think it started to degrade after cod:uo though ;). If a company wants a game to last its going to need good multiplayer. Single player gets people in the game for a week but multiplayer keeps the gaming going for years.

Are you seriously saying that Crysis, doesn't have replay value ? The sandbox game, with huge landscapes and loads of options to accomplish missions ? Plus Crysis multiplayer is very good too.

The key complaint was really only that they couldn't run it on max settings and on aging systems.

As for the "stallers", well...they are the ones being praised for how their games scale with older hardware and whatnot, so I would figure that people think they're pretty good. Seems like these people are getting what they wanted. If at least they didn't go around criticizing those that actually push the industry forward...

There's a video on IGN that demonstrates the engine's ability to develop on both the PS3 and 360 simultaneously

Part 1
Part 2

Thanks for the links. And these tools look awesome. It reminds of what id showed with id Tech 5. Crytek and id are really the only companies that try to move the industry forward at this point.

I was quite amazed how "user-friendly" the guy made it look, especially after hearing all the talk about how difficult it is to develop for the PS3. I mean, you click a checkbox or 2 and now you're making a multiplatorm game in real time!
