Socket M2 question

I am planning on upgrading my comp to a socket M2 next year, however I was wondering if it will only have support for DDR2 or will you be able to run DDR on it as well? Cant decide if I should splurge for 2 gigs of good quality ram now only to have to upgrade to DDR2 later or to hold off and get some inexpensive chips.

I have heard that the nVidia chipsets for this will only be DDR2. Who knows what VIA will bring out, though.

DDR2 is no more expensive than DDR. The price premium is a thing of the past. Get DDR now and DDR2 later.

yeah, but buying 2gigs of quality DDR and DDR2 is expensive, which is what hes talking about.

with a64's, the chipset has nothing to do with the memory, as the memory controller is on the cpu ;)

and yes, M2 will be ddr2 only, i believe the initial spec will be ddr2-667

To the thread starter. I don't know what kind of situation you're in. But you could do what I did if you have a 5 year old computer. Build an OK "backbone" like good case, power supply, DVD-rw, HD then the rest you can put cheap crap like a Gigabyte 9600 Pro video card ($79), Duron 1.8 GHz ($42), 512 MB RAM, cheap socket A Asus or Abit board and cheap heatsink. I chose cheap components so I can do a "real" upgrade next year. It's a good solution for me since I can run WinXP no problem and new video game demos, mulitasking I wasn't able to do before, and I have a DVD burner.

Single Channel Right?

no idea.. seeing as S1, the mobile socket is ~650 pins, i think that's single channel with M2 being dual.. but i really don't know yet

there's no need to drop ~$150 for a gig of ram (period) if you are going to be in need/want of cash for a M2 upgrade. I would drop the cash for 2gb if you really want, but honestly I don't think the difference between 1gb and 2gb is noticable in most applications. Either way, go with something inexpensive, crucial value seems to have been getting ok marks from guys around here.
