K, here are some screenshots of all my task after about a minute i turned on my computer. i did not open anything at all. this is normal for me to have 53 task when i start up. since i just formated i put the same exact programs on my computer and before i formated i still usually had 53 task running. so its nothing out of the ordinary for me. but i was looking at my friends computer today and he only had about 32 task running. heres what usually runs in the background on my comp. nortan antivirus 2005, ati catlyst control center, logitech mouse driver controler thingey, creative volume control, and belkin ups program. those are all the programs on the taskbar next to the time. here are the pics. Is this normal? Or is this a crazy amount of processes?

But considering you have such an obscene amount of system memory (2Gb), unless you happen to have any spyware/adware or a virus. You could run more twice as much tasks as you currently have without a real hitch on your performance. (low memory task I mean)

That is unless you work heavily on graphic desings. In which case you probably use much of your ram on it. Though it doesnt seem that you do.
 
Also every night I run adaware, plus i just formated, so it couldnt be adaware already.

Haha, that's what I thought at first. :p

I simply think you have too many bloatware crap on your hard drives. You really don't need to use ATI's features or even any other features for everyday use.

Symantec alone adds alot of running tasks. I don't know if you are bound to Norton due to purchasing it, but some good free alternatives are AVG and Avast. They aren't as big of resource hogs as Norton.

Other than that, you just have a bunch of unnecessary programs/services running (Example: ATI Hotkey Poller; Sandra Data Service, etc)

The only thing I liked about it was it's fast scanning time. Otherwise I like AVG much better. AVG is such low on recources you won't even know it's running (unless you look in the taskbar of course ;))

try antivir then... i remember i saw posted a while ago that between avg, avast, antivir, norton, nod32, etc. Antivir had the smallest footprint of them all.
 
Also do any of these programs keep there virus definitions up to date as much as nortan. because live update always does it every couple of days.

i know avg does automatic updates, antivir doesnt.

I believe all the paid avs do automatic updates.
 
if i download avg on there website can i burn it to a disk and use it over and over again if i format again?
edit: im thinking of buying the AVG Professional Single Edition for around $33.30
 
Yes you can use it over and over again. Just save the key they email to you. If you ever lose the key, go back and register and download again.

First, there's a page that'll let you download it again as long as you have the serial here. I can't see any reason why you shouldn't be able to burn that file to a CD. The real value is the serial, which you'll probably want a hardcopy of, just in case.

(For the record, I use the free version of AVG and can't say I miss the features of the full version, except perhaps the faster update servers.)
 
You know if you don't want all those task running, and if you know what some on them do, you can stop them? By the looks of you it, YOU, are running more than the System. Which means, check your Taskbar and see which programs are getting launced at startup (Icons near the clock) and go into their properties and sometimes they have an option not to boot at startup. If you don't get the option through the programs you can go Start--Run--"msconfig" (minus the qoutes)
Click Startup, uncheck which you dont want. You can pretty much figure out what they are there too. Then click services, and sometimes there are some in there that you can turn off as well. I turned off about a zillion :p on my dads Toshiba Tablet PC. So much random useless things.
 
Im going to buy AVG. Im just going to do a fresh format and get as least task up as possible. So i need some tips. In order to have catylst A.I. enabeld dont I have to have CCC installed. Also do i need to even install the logitech mouse drivers for my mx1000. will it improve anything over the normal xp drivers that come with xp for the mouse. Also for my Belkin Ups do i need to install the software. Because i install it because the ups software tells my computer to shut off when the battery gets low if there is no power. And KevinO mentioned something about Sandra Data Service, wich is probably installed when i install sisoftware sandra. and Sandra Data Service is a task running. does it need to be running if i have sandra installed? and any other tips would be great. thanxs
 
bump, i just bought and downloaded avg so i can format and install it right after. so im going to format tonight. so i need some quick tips. especially on the ati issue. thanxs
 
i formated. i installed everything i ususally do. i didnt do ccc or any mouse drivers from logitech and i installed avg. i only have about 38 procesessses running normally. wich is a good improvement. i havnt installed java yet, wich i think will take up a process. or printer drivers. is there anyway to get my printer to work without downloadin the software for my hp 2410xi photosmart all in one, the software takes up another process that i dont want, i think it hpcompgr or something like that. i just want my printer to print and thats it.
 
Just go into the register (HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run) and remove that hp executable from the list.
 
thanxs, also the only reason i need java is for azureus. is there a better bitorrent program that doesnt use a java based platform. or should i just stick with azureus?

stick with azureus, the best out there.

btw.

jusched = java update scheduler

its not java runtime enviroment (jre integrates into systems services i guess), you can disable it thru msconfig safely. I do.

im trying to do it right now, can u be a little more specific on how to do it, im kinda lost right now, but im trying:D
 
Anti-Virus software is the biggest waste of money. You'd be better off buying another HDD and storing your main/install files and if you ever get the inckling you've got a virus, just reinstall windows.
 
that strategy seems pretty reckless to me. with all the worm viruses going around you're just adding to the problem. virus scanners not only protect your data but curb the spread of viruses as well.

No Problem :).

Click Start -> Run and type regedit
Browse through the folders(called keys) to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
You should see a screen like below:

Delete the value(s) in the right pane that you don't want.

::NOTE:: Please be careful as to what you delete in the registry. You could cause Windows to stop functioning correctly. Deleting from the run shouldn't effect anything, but if you accidentally delete something other than that it isn't my fault :D

Please don't give that advice. Anti-virus is necessary in today's world and there are great FREE versions of the software. AVG and Avast.

::ANOTHER NOTE:: Please lets not turn this thread into another no anti-virus / pro anti-virus thread :)

thanxs, i deleted the HP thing, anything else that i should delete. sonic is my burning program, and the task thats in the run is some update thing.
