I just recently got a new monitor so I went to a higher res of 1920 x 1200


I've got a 4870 1GB and I'd like to upgrade...


I've got a Phenom 2 940, 4GB ram, Foxconn A7DA-S 790GX


would there be a big difference if I just got another 4870 and used crossfire over shellin out the the large $$ for the x2?


some of my things are I've seen the coolers on the x2's and I had that design it's usually loud, and the Sapphire toxic 1GB 4870 looks like it has a better cooler on it with heatpipes and all... so heat and noise ar taken into consideration cause I don't want to buy an after market cooler for either of them.

performance/heat/noise which is a better solution..?


games: WoW, COD4, COD5, just got stalker clear sky... fallout 3...
 
that review doesn't have the 4870 X2 in it.... so it doesn't really show me what I'm asking about...

I'm trying to justify the cost of a 4870 X2 over the cost of another 4870 1GB

$450 vs $230 / Performance
 
yeah I typed that too, gave me a lot of info... unfortunately it's mostly on old drivers and that can make a big difference, I don't really see a lot of sites redoing reviews when new drivers are released...


and oddly enough the link you posted shows different results then most of the places I visited...



I know that it will use more power, i don't know if the cooling side will be better one over the other... which is something I don't think any of the places have said that I have read atleast...


ohh and also most of the places compared 2x 4870 512MB not the 1GB like I have... so that doesn't do me any good...

looks like google is slowly losing that battle...
 
From what I have seen on reviews... 4870x2 is just about the same exact speed as 2x 4870s.. possibly a little faster due to the bridge chip being onboard.

From what I have seen in other posts, unless you do have the 1GB card, which you do, it is not worth going crossfire due to the cards will run out of RAM at the higher resolutions.

If it were me, I would just go crossfire. Then again, I only game at 1280x1024 on a 19" monitor so I definitely don't need a crossfire setup.

Lol, losing the battle? Because someone hasn't custom-tailored a review exactly for your specific needs? Give me a break.
 
If you're especially concerned about fan noise, I'd like to point out the obvious and say that 2 fans will be louder than 1 fan. Then again, 2 slow fans can easily be quieter than 1 fast fan, but these aren't icy cold cards we're talking about.

I think it depends on how much your money is really worth to you. The single GPU solution will be neater and slightly faster, as well as easier on your ears. The double GPU solution is cheaper... far, far cheaper. And less of a hassle, too---you won't have to figure out what to do with your extra card.

Then again, a double GPU solution is harder to upgrade down the road---you're dealing with selling 2 cards instead of just the one.

Also... do you really need that much raw graphics power for 1920 x 1200? Is the single 4870 1GB that weak?

I'm not saying they should, if I asked a question that was answered all over google I obviously wouldn't have posted this? so because someone hasn't tailored their review to my needs yes I have to post here... isn't that the whole point? if google had all the answer why would anyone bother being here?

I would understand if google answered my question then I would like omg I feel stupid and go on my way... but I've been around message boards long enough I know how to work google when needed.

btw, I wasn't tryin to give you a hard time about the google thing, I just looked before I posted so it wouldn't feel stupid...

eh not a problem I don't sell my stuff when I upgrade... I've still got my old 9800 pro, and geforce 2... ya never know when you might need an old part for some reason...

Yeah, good call. The fan on the X2 looks like it'd be kindy whiny at load.

You should just get a 295, then. It'd be just as practical, and it'd hold you off on the upgrades for a while longer. ;)
 
I can't see any reason to go with a 4870 X2 unless you want trifire. (not worth it really) just drop another 4870 1gb and be done with it
