SLI bridge required?

Just got another 8800GT one is an MSI, one is an EVGA both are the same core and I know that I can SLI these together even though they are different models, but is an SLI bridge required to get SLI functioning?

other than length are they "universal"?..i.e if I get one made for the MSI will it also work for the EVGA?

how can I tell if SLI is actually running?

You need an SLI bridge. To tell if SLI is functioning, you need to enable SLI Visual Indicators in the control panel. You can watch the SLI load balancing take place when you run a 3D Application.

BTW, if you have an SLI mobo then it should have shipped with a SLI bridge.

If you dont have a SLI mobo, then you need to get one.

P.S. I am not being condescending, but you don't have a sig, or mentioned what mobo you have, so wanted to be sure.

Well I figured that the original poster would have known if his or her board was compatible with SLI or not and was simply asking about the bridge alone. Some cards like the 8400GS don't require the bridge for SLI. Higher end cards like the 8800GTX for example do in fact need the bridge.
